Another thing, use filters on your lenses, I was at the beach taking photos of the sunset with a strong seabreeze and when I got back to the car I noticed how much salt spray there was on my UV filter! I would hate for all that to be on the front lens element Or even worse, inside the lens! (I was using the 17-40).

Ya. That's the only thing I'm glad about, in using filters. I just don't worry about cleaning salt/sand off the front element.
I bought my equipment to use, not for resale. Wear on my gear proves I'm not just fondling it in front of the TV, and that it gets toted more than 10 steps from the car...

How can you NOT take it? Isn't that what it's for?
Take precautions and take your camera.
BTW...You're such a sissy!
I think thats the reason why I have 2 cameras? I take the film SLR out the beach all the time, but have yet to take the digital. So yes, I am taking pictures at the beach, just not digital.
Nothing to fear by taking your camera to the beach as long as you take simple precautions.
Don't drop it in the sand.
Don't get caught aiming at the big guy's girlfriend.
Do try to minimize time spent with lens off camera.
Do shield from wind when changing lenses.
Do Use a filter to keep salt air/spray off lens.
Do wipe everything at end of day.
When you're not shooting, put camera in a pillowcase or large plastic sack. If possible, don't bring your regular camera bag to beach as it will just fill with sand grit.
I got $5G's insurance for $30/year. No question asked if it gets stolen, destroyed etc. Hell it costs way more than that to buy a waterproof bag like the dryzone.
I have taken my 10D to the vineyard for over a month, to the beach every day, no issues. However I have a few rules, I don't change lenses if it's windy (good common sense), 2 I do NOT let the kids near the camera or the bag it's in (a fanny pack), 3 thou shall not take the camera to the waves to take pictures of the kids splashing in the waves ( I saw a guy with a really nice Nikon setup get taken down by a wave (yes with the camera and lenses)).
I recommend when you put the camera into the bag you put it first into a zip lock bag.
Remember it's a camera and meant to be used, it isn't a Leica meant to be fondled.

...reminds me of those old guys you see driving Corvettes 25mph in a 35mph zone. I would love to ask one these guys why they didn't just buy a Cadillac. Don't be one of those guys. Life is short. Play with your toys and live life to the fullest.
Hey! Take a look at Caddy's these days! They have Corvette engines. :P
As for the camera, take it to the beach. I have taken a Rebel to the beach a couple of times and never had an issue. Be sure to give it a good wipe down after you are finished and you'll be fine.
Thanks to those with encouraging words. Just what I needed as I pack for a week of shooting kiteboarding and windsurfing on the Sea of Cortez in La Ventana, Baja.

I live 600 metres from the beach and have never had a problem with both my D60 nor my 20D. I wouldn't take it out in a windstorm though and I am extremely careful changing lenses
I always take the cam with me to the beach. Also change lenses on the beach, I normally put my lenses without the backcover in the bag (shoulderbag, no backpack. This way you won't have to lay down the bag on the beach) so I can do a faster lens change. Even with 6 Bft windspeeds.. Hell, even the monopods has been submerged for over 3 feet.
I almost live on the beach, and I've used my 1D mk2 and 10D on it many many times, and there's been no problem at all. Just be careful when it's windy and wipe it well after use. I even used it in a snow storm the other day. It was covered in snow but still no problem.

Is this through home owners insurance? Mind if you share where you got your equipment insured?
Chris, beautiful sunset! Was it taken near Newport Beach? I'm sure all piers look the same, but that one looks a bit familiar.
