Quick and dirty test shots just now: handheld, AF, about 2 feet away from the target, centre crop. Minor USM done in Photoshop, as I would to any photo.
Edit: haha! I just looked at this post. Looks like I have some sort of scabby disease; they're just for hay fever.

just in case this was not clear to everyone
When you are in AF SERVO , Flash IR AF assist automatically
is OFF.
Thankyou, I always had my 20D in AF Servo mode and was wondering why the AF Assist never fired, now I know!
I have the opportunity to test three pieces of Sigma 30mm 1.4 today in two camera retail shops.
This is really an interesting lens from an interesting company.
All three lenses "sound" differently, I mean the focusing mechanism.
The first one has a low hoarse hum, the second one is quite quiet indeed, the third one has a high pitch sound, like a drill.
For sharpness and focusing.
The first one is the best with good centre sharpness similar to the one above.
The second one is not consistent in focusing hence sharpness in successive shots using the same focusing target (shutter of 1/200 to 1/400). I tried AI servo and one shot, no luck.
The third one is quite consistent in sharpness and focusing, but the sharpest spot is not right in the centre
