I am considering an Averatec 12" screen notebook. If you have, had, or use one, how do you like it and how is the screen. I'm not interesed in editing photos with it, only checking focus and storage. 11" X 9" X 1" and 4 lbs. looks promising and for less than $1000.
Guy I work with (well, he's actually in another office) bought one a few years ago. I ask just about every time I see him and he's always pleased with it.
That's what I'm using right now. It's nice and compact, and the price couldn't be beat. I got mine from SAMS club for 750 plus 150 for a pretty good 3 year warranty. My old laptop was a vaio, and I can tell teh Averatec isn't nearly as well built as the Vaio, but I have the warranty so I'm not too worried.
The screen is fine, I have never had any problems with it.
I have an Averatec on loan but i sure wouldn't buy one.
I would look at the HP 1410 which is around $799 @ Staples with a 14" widescreen and lot of power and features. 512MB plus 80 GB hard drive.
Beautiful screen.
Averatec has had some financial issues caused by it's overseas owner that took inventory out of the market for a while. They seem to be fine now but I would prefer a Dell or an Hp.
What don't you like about the Averatec, and what model is it?
Neither Dell or HP have anything smaller than 14", at least I couldn't find one on their site. I have a 15" Hp now, and want to get something smaller and lighter. I have dealt with Dell tech support and swore I would never buy anything that I had to send back for service. Averatec maybe just as bad, that's a chance I'm willing to take.
The iBook is a consideration, I'm going to look at one on Monday.
No offence, but all these laptops including Apple are likely made by the same manufacturer Clevo, Compal, or Quanta. If you just want something small and light for storage then look on ebay. I wanted one for the same reason and picked up a used Compaq Evo410 12" screen, 30gb hard drive, 1.2 ghz, WinXP, 3.5 pounds, smaller footprint and thickness than any of these other laptops mentioned - and it was only $300. They usually go for the high $300 to the high $400's. About the price of a useless digital wallet...but you can do so much more.
Sorry guys. We used Averatec's at my office. They are cheap, but over time each and almost every one had to be replaced. Many of them were used only at the desk (not used as portable) but they just didn't stand up even to office use. I was kind of surprised by the high rating they got in some magazines. They are not durable..
I've heard the performance is decent on the averatecs but they aren't the most durable machines. Of course most 12inch notebooks are pretty flimsy, even the expensive ones.
Dell has a 12 inch model that is pretty popular and is affordable when they have the stackable coupons. I think its the 700m.
I really hope Apple decides to put DVD burners in thier 12inch Intel based iBooks. That's the main reasons I stopped looking at the current models. I want to be able to back up my raw images on the road without taking 30 CDs.
Well for what its worth, my 12 inch Powerbook as seen a fair amount of handling. I carry it with me everywhere and it gets a good amount of bumps. I do keep it in a neoprene sleeve, but thats really just to keep dust out more than protect it. It is pretty solid.
