p.1 #1 · Re: PS Speed Demon Revisited

I did this just to see how bad a 5 year old computer is and to serve as a benchmark when I replace it, hopefully after the first of the year.

I didn't have a stopwatch, but no matter, a sun dial would have done the trick.

150 sec
AMD Athlon 1.2ghz
784 mb ram
PS CS

So, who can top that (bigger is better). Must be your primary machine.

20 - 21 seconds acrossseveral tests.

AMD 4400 x2
4 GB RAM
/3 GB switch enabled in XP Pro (I don't think this makes any difference for this image, but might well make a differnce on a larger image.
WD 36GB Raptor just for CS2 scratch space (again, probably doesn't make any difference for this test since I got 100% efficiency)

I'd love for someone with the quad G5 to try this test.

They went with Intel because of the Intel dominance of the laptop technology market. I have an AMD laptop (for performance) and while fast, the battery life sucks (about 2.5 hours per charge). The marketshare for desktops while important, is small in comparison to the surge in growth for laptops. The education market place is nearly 88% laptop as is the new surge in demand for mobile office computing. They have focused their efforts on this growing market trend. While speed for people like us is very important, battery life and other things that Intel offers with their Mobile processors is more attractive in the growing market trends.
