Manny, you should be fine: the 35-70 works on a 5D. And as the mirror of the 5D comes closer to the mount on its movement path than the mirror of your 10D, nothing is to be feared.

So waht is the latest advice on using Cameraquest adapters versus the German prescison machined ones from foto huppert?

My CZ lenses: 18, 21, 28 2.0, 28-85 Vario Sonnar and 50 i.4 Planar.

For the 5D what are the choices to get the 18mm Distagon not to be damaged or the camera itself?

Who is the the best mirror surgeon?

Is there a DIY file-down for the lens?

If I have to send the camera to get the mirror trimmed, how long does this take and will my helth insurance cover it/

Asher, though I haven't done it yet, I nominate myself as best mirror surgeon - 9 international awards for gem cutting:

Well, that soundsgreat, have you done one yet? Looks magnificent. There are some people that carvec scenes in shells just mm wide!

Don, thanks for the info and sharing!

So you certainly have the skills!

How long would it take?

Anyone else in the running for champion surgeon.

BTW, my 21mm Distagon and the 28-85 Distagon are loose in the Cm'quest adapters. Anyone know why are have a the very very best made adapter?

No, I haven't done one yet. I could do it within 2 days.

But some comments about how to hold it for cutting: The primitive way is to hand hold it (with latex gloves) against a very fine diamond cutting lap. This insures no damage to the mirror surface. But the parallelism of the cut is by eye only -probably good enough.

The precise gem way is to attach it to an aluminum dop stick with hot wax and position the mirror with the faceting arm. The cut will be absolutely parallel. The danger here is the possibility of marring the mirror surface with the dop stick or the hot wax.

I would prefer the first method. The diamond lap will cut through the mirror and the plastic or metal frame around it. Perhaps Guy can tell us if there are any issues of mirror movement with the bottom part of the frame cut away.

On your loose Camera Quest adapters - I suggest using the cheap eBay adapter after I tune it for thickness. JameelH and I will have a report soon on this thickness tuning.

You might want to chat with Kidigital, who has done some 5D mirrors for the Leica+5D crowd.

I confirm that the Zeiss 50mm f1.7 Japan version with white f16 mark on DOF scale does not clear the mirror on EOS 5D. No harm done, but still worth noticing...

I have a Japan version #6173831 and it does'nt clear the mirror.

When it's on infinity the mirror is stuck. I only have to turn the focussing ring a fraction to loosen it again. I bought the lens from Foto Huppert (Germany) and already made an appointment to change the lens. Mr. Huppert is afriendly guy and he promissed to solve the problem.

Don't forget that Zeiss has an (expanding) new line of manual Zeiss lenses made especially for Canon and Nikon. You might consider the Nikon mount version with the EOS adaptor for better resale.

My Zeiss 50mm f1.7 MM (green f16 mark) with Chinese eBay adapter DOES clear mirror on my 5D. I don't understand these random tolerances..

Isn't there some possibility that the metal bracket on top of the lens could scratch some Canons on the outside? I would buy the M42 mount version for more general compatibility.

Can someone toss me a URL? I can't find any info on Zeiss for Canon at www.zeiss.com.

Used Contax lenses have a good resale value btw, probably better than the new one to come. You dont have the price drop of new gear when you open the box.

Just letting you know...

I had a CZ 2.8/28 version which did not clear the mirror of my 5D. I think it was a AE version, it had a low lensnumber.

Now I changed it for a MM version with a relative high lensnumber (7900etc) and it works fine.

And with the 18, it is just the opposite!
