Other than about a thousand clams price difference on the used market, is there any significant performance difference between these two lenses, i.e. AF speed, sharpness, etc?
The Series I is arguably sharper, and it has a better tripod mount. Not so important at high shutter speed sports photography, but definitely something to keep in mind when shooting slower speeds.
The Series II is lighter, and comes with a fancy Carbon Fibre lens hood. The case for the Series II is very nice, and actually usable, but as far as I know, there is no difference in AF Speed.
I have used both lenses, and would not hesitate to save a few bucks and buy the Series I.

The first version is a great lens. It seems to focus almost as fast. It may be a little sharper, although both are very good. The big difference optically is that the first version has much more pleasing and smooth Bokah, especially above about f-5.6. I try to shoot these big lenses wide open, or almost, but sometimes at the track on a bright day you need to stop up and the "1" is much better at higher f-stops.
