p.1 #1 · How to default to thumbnails opening photoshop
Does anyone know how to have photoshop (v7) open a file (file>open) with the thumbnails showing instead of the "list" of filenames showing. After I select thumbnails, than whenever I close the window, or photoshop, after selecting thumbnails, it always seems to revert back to "list". Thanks in advance for any comments on this

Your question peaked my interest, so I looked in PS and couldn't find a setting. I also tried looking in Windows Explorer to see which folders opened as thumbnails and which opened as lists - it made no difference in PS, all of my folders show as thumbnails in File>Open.
Until you get a real answer, have you tried the file browser in PS?

Short answer is yes. But, I'm giving instructions assuming you're on Windows (specifically XP) like me.
What you're looking for is in the button bar at the top of the dialog. You have from left to right: the drop-down location box, then the back button, then the "up" button, then new folder, and finally the view drop-down menu. This menu is where you choose how to view the files. You have all the choices available in explorer (my open dialog is right here showing thumbnails).
But, I prefer to use the file browser. It's sitting in my palette well all the time. You have a full explorer-style infterface as well as a larger preview & EXIF info display for highlighted files, additionally, you have some extra functions in the context menu available. This is one of the really great updates in v7.

Hey Steve, great idea. I just went in there, the thumbnails come up, rather than filenames. I never really paid attention to that filebrowser. I see it has a few nice extra functions like rotating a the thumbnail level and some other stuff. I'll poke around. Looks like that may do it! Thanks!! Mike

Thanks Chris. Yes, I have win xp. I had tried the thumbnail selection from that box, they do come up, but, after I 'close' the photo I opened, or shut down photoshop and restart, it defaults to the "list" again. Appreciate you trying to help. Thanks!
PS. I think using that filebrowser is probably the way I need to go.

Mike, et.al.
In WinXP Explorer you can control the viewing of filenames, thumbnails, details and/or icons by setting your preferences as follows:
Launch the Explorer [formerly the File Manager]
Drop-down the "Tools" menu at the top
Select "Folder Options"
Click on the "View" tab
Scroll toward the bottom of the list and file a check box for "Remember each Folder's Settings" (up 5 from the bottom).
Using this check box will keep your preference, on a folder by folder basis, until you decide to change it again. Best wishes. -Art

Hi Art,
Thanks for commenting on this. I had tried that method before, unless I am missing something, it seems to only work for folders brought up within xp. It does not have a bearing on the folders brought up within photoshop. At least for me, it doesn't. Mike
Side note, I also read that that method only works to a max of about 200 folders.
