Think I'll wait until this hurricane dies down before return for fix...so far, looks like less than 1% problem for me, I can live with this for a while. Exceptional glass otherwise.
Has there been any official announcement from Canon? I don't remember that they have actually recalled products before unless there was a safety hazard.
Bobster2 has a point. Keep this one, call it the 24-105 LF (LensFlair) edition, for some spectacular shots, then get another one for the 'real deal' when they get it fixed.
I don't own the lens, but I do have a couple of comments:
1) I think it was very good that Canon publically acknowledged this. They could have pretended that it was odd/unusual circumstances, and it wasn't the lens. I think they did the good/hard thing to do.
2) I would be somewhat concerned about the lens after it is fixed and even the new lenses that are already fixed. I haven't read what is causing this specifically, but it looks like an optical problem that would require an optical correction of some type. This isn't as simple as a cosmetic problem. I would wonder what the fix could do optically to the lens. I think that I would want to wait and see what other early adopters find with the new "fixed" lenses. They might not perform the same.
I called Canon this afternoon to find out first hand the situation. I've not had any occurances of the flare with my lens but it's a fairly rare situation - frankly the images I've gotten from the lens are first rate, only limited by the user. Canon did acknowledge the problem and offered what the poll here has; a refund, repair, or keep the lens. I took a call tag for repair which I can use at my discretion. I'd rather not be without the lens for the fall and holidays and will see what happens after they begin repairing them in November and shipping modified lenses. Canon did say they are not supplying the dealers with any more until the issue in production is resolved.

I agree with point 1, wholeheartedly - they could have hid the issue.
As for Item two, I agree that it surely isn't a simple cosmetic repair, but it could be traceable to something as simple as a lens-coating issue or poor interior flocking, or as difficult as a redesign.
One big positive I see is that there may be a number of lower-priced "refurbished" 24-105 lenses at B&H in a few months.

I was thinking about some of the same things as well after I wrote the last post. I hope it is something that doesn't change the basic optical qualities...at least negatively.
I also agree that B&H will have a bunch of refurbs! This could be good or bad.

If you haven't even encounter the 'problem' yourself, should you continue to enjoy using this nice lens or should you just refund it, just incase you will have the problem in the future?
Personally I am in no big rush to refund the lens and will continue to use it. No, I am not burying my head in the sand. I just haven't had any experience but good about this lens.

Frankly, if you can't reproduce the problem on your lens now, the odds are very high that you'll never be able to reproduce the problem. I would try very hard to make sure that I didn't have a problem, though.

I am very seriously bummed. I managed to dig one up and was immediately confronted with 8 days of rain and then a nasty little thing called work. Haven't had much of a chance to shoot with it but from what I saw it was as good as my 24-70. Since I shoot into the sun alot the posssibility that the flare is going to bite me is too much of a chance to take on a $1200+ lens. So mine will go back. At least I hadn't sold my 24-70 yet.
