Best , is a hard thing to quantify. It is a very good lens for the money

thats what I meant. Best lens for the buck in the price range. Compaired to simular priced (Sigma ect)

Don't know how important the wide end is to you, but the 24-85 is a great lens for the bux (about $300 after rebate)

is the 24-85 a Nikon lens? I am replacing my 28mm MF lens so I would like the wide end.

Yes. There's two versions of this lens. The 'cheap' one is the G lens, which is what I have, but it has an ED element, and it's unbelievable for the price.

Then there's the D version which is f/2.8

My 12-24 covers me on the really wide end, but the 24-85 does a great job too.
