p.1 #1 · SB-800 on amvona softbox-speedring needed?
I posted this ? in the lighting area and got no response. Is anyone here using SB-800's with softboxes from amvona.com? They told me the supplied speedring does not fit shoe mount flashes. I found a Chimera speedring at B&H that looks like it will work.
Anyone with this setup? Will this work alright for weddings and group shots?

Renee,
I have been using small strobes (flashes) for quite some time in soft boxes. The best speedring is the one with the most mounting options, I have one that has mounting for a few different strobes. I dont' mount the flash to the actual speedring. I use a bracket mounted on the stand that has a shoe adapter that can be slip forward or back of the ring. The ring is mounted to the front of the bracket via mounting hole and screw.
For group shots I would say no from a single. The box the flash can eluminate effectively is a small one and you just won't have enough light to effectively light the group unless you have a few of these set up.
In theory a better solution for you (assuming you have multiple flashes) is to have a light panel to shoot through and that way you can great a large diffused area using distance to diffuser and multiple stropes for spread. It's also cheaper to do it this way. If you want to control spill you can use black panels sorta like a gobo. I am experimenting with this right now and it works great.
*edit: I reread your question and no I don't use my SB-800 with softboxes from amvona. The chimera speedring that has a hotshoe adapater should work and unless you have several sb-800 setup like this it won't be sufficient for a group shot.
