p.1 #1 · A question about what body to buy. non digital.

A friend of mine owns the canon a2e body with the vertical grip and i think its a damn nice body to have.. im thinking of getting one myself but i thought i would ask if anyone has any opinions on a different body that may have better features.
i really enjoy the 8fps option it has.. so that would be preferable.

should i maybe just go with the a2e and be done with it?

also, if anyone happens to own one and would like to sell it to me then hit me with a PM and we will do some business..

I have an A2 which is the same minus the eye control feature, and I think it's a wonderful camera, ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Just look at how long production lasted on that model. The maximum frame rate is 5fps, with 3fps for servo--not 8fps. For that kind of speed you'll need an EOS 3 (7fps), 1NRS, or 1V. I think that you'd be impressed with all of the features on the A2E though, and they're pretty inexpensive now. I almost sold mine and then thought better of it.

I have had a ElanII for 10 years or so. I sold all my other Canons, Nikons and Konicas and kept this. It is not "state of the art" as film canons go but it is reliable and takes a darn sharp clear fine picture. I use both Canon and Vivitar lenses and it makes the Vivitar 28-300 shine. Read this link :http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/canon-elanII
I have 1 of my 2 bodies for sale if interested.

I read that your better off buying the "international version" of the AE2 (EOS 5) as it is slightly better than the American AE2.

See artical at:

The EOS 5 is a good camera, I can also recomend the EOS 30/33 (Elan7/7e). I have the Elan 7e and it is a great camera and thay are dirt cheap on the secondhand market or you can buy a brand new "V" Version if you don't want a secondhand camera.

I second the Elan 7. It's newer then the other Elans and served me well for several years. Camera took a beating as well. I would think between the Elan7 or 7N or maybe an EOS 3 that you can't go wrong.

EOS 3, especially if you can get one second hand in good shape.

or, EOS 1vhs for the ultimate film camera...

The A2 has a notorious reputation for broken command dials. The Elan 7N is the best value in a new body, but with mint EOS 3's selling for $375-400, that's the best choice if your funds allow.

I love my A2 with grip. Its a very nice camera with used prices running under $200. Its production run was about 10 years, one of the longest in the EOS line.

EOS 5 w/ eye focus.
Subtle changes from the A2; mainly centered around focus points and viewfinder info.

Had the 1VHS and sold it. Bought the Elan 7NE and have had it for a year. Great camera for the money. Highly recomend the 7NE.

The best film body to buy, bar none, is the EOS 1v (1vHS). (non-digital)
The worst one to buy is any NIKON!!

actually when it come to film, NIKON has a few great bodies.
(and so does this month's issue of PLAYBOY!)

I think you need to clarify why you want a camera, what you intend to do with one and really don't want. The EOS 3 with the PB-E2 is a fantastic camera (I might be selling mine soon to finance some other things), though I was never as impressed with the camera without the drive, still it is two cameras in one - light and small without the drive and a rocket fast sports/action camera with the drive.

I don't like the A2 because of the manual metering issue (see the photo.net article referenced). I had an EOS 5 for a long time and it was wonderful and very light. I sold it when I went digital because I didn't need two film bodies and it was no match for the EOS 3. The only real problems with the A2 is they are very hard to focus manually with wide angle lenses and the controls are different from any other Canon that I know about. The command dials break and they cost about $150 to repair. However, in 5 years mine never broke. The metering on the EOS 3 is very good and consistent, the A2 was not in the same league.

If you are looking for a camera for hiking and travel the A2 is nice. If you want a 1v without paying the price for one get an EOS 3. The EOS 3 was kind of a prototype for the 1v.
