p.1 #1 · 1/4" Plexiglass - flexible at all?

Thanks to the "show us your studio" thread, I made the plunge and ordered pretty much all the equipment I need to start a modest basement studio. I ordered a couple of rolls of 9' seamless paper, but now need to source a sheet of clear plexiglass to go on top.

The dilemma is getting the plexiglass down a stairway to the basement. Does 1/4" thick plexiglass bend at all? Even if I could bend it 15 degrees or so that should allow me to get something a foot or so wider. I would love to get 8' x 6' but may need to settle for 7' x 5' or so.

Also, is 1/4" the thickness that's generally recommended?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I have several sheets of 1/4" x8' x 6' plexi and a few sheets of 1/8" plexi that I first started with. The 1/4" plexi does bend. Its awkward to handle so make sure you have some help with it. The 1/8" will work if you have a nice, flat, solid surface. If you use 1/8" on top of a carpet or soft surface, the surface of the plexiglas will dimple.

Hope this helps,
John

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick reply, you're truly generous with your time (your contributions to the studio thread have been very helpful).

I have very thin Berber carpet, but it is carpet, so I'll probably stick with the 1/4" plexi to be safe. Also, I'm sure I'll end up with multiple sheets at some point, so I may start with a 7' x 5' sheet just to make sure it fits down the stairway, and then get larger sheets later if it looks like they'll fit.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

That size(5X7) will need to be cut from a larger sheet anyway.....likely a 6X8. I suggest getting the 6X8 and if it doesn't fit, return it and have it cut down then. Talk with your supplier, but it will probably be as cheap to go that route due to the difference in sheet price vs. cut size price.
