p.1 #1 · Feisol CT-3401 Tripod Review

After looking at the typical range of Gitzo & Bogen CF tripod offerings, I bought a Feisol CT-3401 tripod last June. I also bought a Kirk BH-3 ballhead for it, and the combination has been in active use from day 1. Since the various tripod offerings had me so conflicted for too long, I thought I would post this experience for those in a similar tripod buying situation.

First, I am not a professional photographer, although I have sold some of my work through the years. Call me an avid amateur with professional aspirations. I wanted a stable tripod that was light enough to hike with, throw over my shoulder for brief walks, and easy to setup and use. Early on, I was captured by the allure of carbon fiber, but taken aback by the Gitzo prices. I’ve heard the argument that someone who spends so much on a camera and lenses should not shy away from a quality support. I buy that argument, really. However, like most of you, I work in a field other than photography and have a family to support. Spending $1000+ on a tripod and ballhead made me cringe, although lenses in this range seem to be a different matter. The purists will scoff at those observations, but it is my honest reaction.

When I found the Feisol website, it seemed too good t be true. They sold a tripod similar to the Gitzo 1228 in terms of size, weight and carrying capacity, but at less than half the price;$185 plus shipping to be exact! I was unsure about buying from far-away Taiwan, and how the shipping would work. So, I read every Feisol review online that I could find, and the consensus seemed to be fairly positive. I was leery of buying a so-called “no name” brand. I have Gitzo and Bogen aluminum tripods, but find them either too big or heavy to consistently carry around. If a tripod is too limiting in any way, be it price, size or weight, then it is of no use when I leave it at home as a result.

I decided to buy the Feisol & Kirk combination, and if the Feisol did not work out, bite the bullet and buy the Gitzo. Upon shipping a day later, I received an email with a scan of the shipping label and expected arrival time. It literally arrived 2 days later—good job, Feisol! Since I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, I was floored. Almost nothing from the mainland ships here that quick, let alone from Taiwan. I’ll break out my next observations out to ease reading.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: light, light, light. It is the same weight as the Gitzo CF tripods I have played with, but holding it in my hand, at home, was a different thing. The finish is very nice, kind of a dull CF look. The legs move out (rotate?) with the same stiffness that I am used to with a quality tripod, as though there are oiled bearings involved. The foam leg coverings are well placed and secure enough to be of use. The leg locks work very well, almost as good as a Gitzo version. The center post seemed a little on the flimsy side, especially when raised, but thoughtfully included a hook on the bottom to aid stability. The center post also unscrews in the middle to leave a shorter length post with the same hook bottom. The legs will flatten very easily via a thumb lever on each leg at the top, and automatically return to normal when collapsed back in. The individual leg segments extend and retract with a “swoosh” sound similar to the Gitzo CF tripods, fairly tight tolerances. The overall first impression was that this is a very nice tripod, and not a cheap Gitzo knock-off in any way (like $20 Rolex watches). I tested stability with my 20D and 70-200/4L + 1.4x tele-extender mounted from the camera body (tripod collar on lens not used), and when locked down, the stability seemed every bit as good as anything else I’ve tried of the same size.

After almost 3 months of use, here are my Pros & Cons.

PROS: very light, very stable (yes, it really is quite stable), relatively inexpensive, easy to use, zero problems in 3 months, very nice foam leg covers standard, useful tripod bag & leg tools included, tall enough with a Kirk BH-3 ballhead & Canon 20D camera without the vertical grip to reach eye level without any stooping for anyone about 5 foot 9 inches (plus or minus several inches, is my guess), quite compact when collapsed down, and a useful center post hook that I wish all tripods had.

CONS: Feisol should redo the center post on the next version; it feels and acts not-so-solid but locks down acceptably in use, there are no spikes or snow boots available for the feet ends, the top could be more secure (rubber coating?) for the ballhead, warranty work is only through the factory in Taiwan, and the leg lock collars are easy to grip and use but not quite as easy as a Gitzo.

All in all, I am very glad I bought the Feisol and anticipate years of excellent use from it. I’ve hiked with it, sunk it into the Pacific Ocean surf, mud, dry sand, dirt, and grass without a concern or problem, and it has performed beautifully. If I were a working pro that used my tripod every single day, I might not buy the Feisol mainly due to the warranty work needing to be done in Taiwan. If a repair were needed, the time required might be excessive for a pro’s purposes. For those of us who do not use our tripod on as frequent a basis, even if heavily used on weekends and holidays, this tripod is perfect! Is the Feisol as good as the Gitzo 1228? Perhaps not quite, but lets say 95% as good for 35% of the cost! I would rate it higher than any Bogen tripod I’ve used, including CF Bogen, or higher than the Gitzo basalt series I briefly examined. The Kirk BH-3 ballhead with the CT-3401 tripod makes for an awesomely light and very stable duo. I really love the Kirk BH-3, it’s the smoothest & most secure ballhead I’ve ever used, but that is for another review. For large majority of us avid photographers, I think this is an easy choice. Get a Feisol and invest the rest in a very nice ballhead. Highly recommended.

I posted a gallery of Feisol tripod pictures at:

I bought the tripod through the Feisol website at: http://www.feisol.com/english/enconnect-n.htm

I hope this review will be of use to someone—enjoy!

Thanks for the great review. I've been thinking about the 3401 for several months and have now decided to get one.

I too, purchased a Feisol 3401 several months ago. It has worked flawlessly (and with little weight) under all field conditions (rain, wind, steep slopes, etc.). I topped mine with an Acratech Ultimate Ballhead for an amazingly light package. I'd unhesitatingly made the same purchases again.

it is unfortunate that i have found with feisol products (using the 1401 monopod as a test bed) that the couplings tend to age more rapidly then the other manufacture that their emulating does. this then tends to loosen things up a bit and then you go for a tighter grip on things then the occasionally stick then.

on their composite- it a standard simple wrap over where the other company does a pull-truded directional winding setup which is a higher grade and stiffer over all.

now this is not to say its a bad thing but don't try to convince yourself that it is an equivelent product. under use it will not last nearly as long as the others. its worth its money but don't be surprised when the time comes.

Good read. Thanks. Will probably afford a tripod in 6 months and I add the feisol line to my list now

I love this tripod. I have only had it for about 2 weeks, but I have taken it with me everywhere. It's so light. It feels lighter than my camera bag with gear inside.

Good review.

Great review. I have the 3401 and it is great. I carried to the top of the Acroplis when it was 105. Never would have done it with my old seven pounder.

Dear Stealth,

Your review should be very helpful to anyone researching a tripod purchase. It should help dispel the idea that one MUST spend a fortune to get a quality CF tripod.

My experience mirrors your completely. I have only a couple of things to add, or perhaps to phrase differently: I have used the 3401 in temperatures down to 15 degrees F with no lockup problems. It is also very adaptable to air travel. Tripod plus Acratech ball head fit in the provided shoulder bag. This combo fits into a standard suitcase (not the carry on) for air travel. As you noted, the only place where there is questionable quality is the primitive screw that locks the vertical travel of the center post. In practice this has not beeen a problem and the height of the tripod without extension is sufficient for most 6 footers.

Hope this helps.

Great review - I think this swung me away from Bogen/Manfrotto (was leaning towards the 055MF3) and towards Feisol for my next tripod. I currently have a Slik 400dx that has actually served me quite well, but at almost 6lbs is a little on the heavy side for the hiking I like to do. Looks like a Feisol 3301 + Kirk BH-3 would be ideal for me.

Any particular reason you went for the 3401 instead of the 3301?

Excellent review. I've been planning on the Feisol when budget allows for a good tripod. This just seals the deal.

the 055MF3 is a considerably different type of tripod from the feisol. if weight is your only concern by all means get it. but for functionality and longevity the 055MF3 outclasses it in every way. it is a much better conceived and manufactured tripod. there the quality shows in how it works.

the manfrotto does things that make it so much more functional. if you were thinking of that and then now thinking of the feisol you couldn't be thinking of function at all.
the feisol is limited to just basic vertical action but is is cheap.

adamp88,

The closed length of the 3401 is less than the 3301, better for traveling (fits in the suitcase with mounted ballhead) but not as stable. How stable is stable enough? Like everything in life, it all depends on the circumstances. With a 20D + 70-300 DI IS @ 300 mm it is stable enough for me -- YMMV.

Adam, I chose the 3401 due to the closed length. I often travel, and have found travel sized tripods to be too limiting. The 3401 can easily fit in my baggage and is not too heavy to be left in a room instead of being used. Like I mentioned above, a tripod that's unavailable for any reason (left at home due to weight, size, or whatever) is of no use to me. I found with my previous tripods that I left them at home or in the car when I should not have mainly due to those limitations. So, I wanted to ensure my next tripod was one I was USE, and the Feisol surely fits the bill for me.

To Gitzo and Bogen (insert tripod brand here) lovers, I sure don't mean to fault those tripods at all my writing a positive review of something else. I own and have used both brands. I looked at and played with almost every CF or basalt tripod made before I made my decision (except for the Feisol, ironically, but that's also what led me to write this review), and used the Feisol for 3 months before writing this review. I am sure some of you decided to go Bogen or Gitzo for very valid reasons, for you. I made my decision for me, and found the overall Feisol package (price included) to be superior for my purposes. YMMV. My decision should not be a personal affront to anyone; no need to defend your pet brand.

If I won the lottery, or shot for National Geo, the Gitzo 1228 and/or a 1325 would be the first tripods I would buy, along with a ton of heinously expensive Canon L glass. Even if I bought those other CF Gitzos, I would still keep and use my Feisol--it has a place! We take our purchases so personally, but we would better serve our fellow photographers by being brutally honest. Instead, we groupthink ourselves into thinking a uber-expensive Gitzo is the only option that will work, and that is just not true.

Not everyone needs to spend $1000k+ on a tripod & ballhead to take quality photos. In fact, you can do very nicely for less than half.

Same experience here.
3401 for shorter collapsed length to fit in luggage.
Manfrotto 486rc2

Stable, short and light.
Will it work for a bird shooter, nope.
Does it do all I ask? Yep.

p.1 #16 · Feisol CT-3401 Tripod Review

I have been using a Feisol 3301 (a three-section version) for about a year and in general, I have been happy with the tripod. I do have and use a Gitzo 1300 series (for birding) and a Gitzo 1000 series (for travelling) in combination with the Feisol. The Feisol is my most common use tripod for about anything else; I took it three times to take pictures of sand dunes, without worrying about damage/exposure. One thing that I noticed is the glue that they use is not that good and I had to reglue the rubber feet and the first leg section using some epoxy glue. From the price/performance ratio, I would give it a high mark, as well.

Mark: Looks like they've set up a local (US) distributor as well-
http://www.thresholdconcepts.com/photo-ct3301.htm

Cost for a 3301 is $210, including free shipping, vs $180+$37=$217 if you order direct from Taiwan. California customers would have to add sales tax, making it slightly higher, but still, it might be an option some would prefer.

I got a brand new 3301 from B&S board and a Feisol monopod off Ebay. I have been very happy with them from the limited use I got out of them. Just return from vacation at the beach last month. I used the tripod in the ocean water and sand got in between the leg sections. I took it apart hoping to rinse them off, but the joints were greased, so sand sticked in. It was a pain trying to get rid of all sand. Sent Feisol an email and was advised to completely clean off all grease as well and reapply lubricant. I hope to do that this weekend.

Yes, the center column is flimsy. I took it off. It is useless under most circumstances anyway. The complain I have about Feisol is that the base where the ballhead is screwed on looks like being made of cheap plastic. I am afraid it may crack if I drop it on hard surface. Overall, it is a very nice tripod for the price.
