This lens looks very interesting as a walk around and traveling lens. I may have to buy one eventually to see for myself.
From viewing Peter's original image taken with his 20D, the center is beautiful but the edge seems to get soft. However, the one image I looked at was taken wide opne at f4 at 24mm & 1/800 sec. I wonder how much better the new lens at f8 on a FF 1D series camera. Thank you Peter for sharing your images. Looking forward to more tests, especailly like to see how well does this lens do with the FF body.
Henry, the lens handles very well - as well as my 24-70L did. The IS is super quiet. While the Tamron is also great, I like having a 77mm filter thread again, so I don't need step-up rings for my 77mm filters.
I am going to take more shots which show corner performance this weekend.
Going with a slower lens than f2.8 you lose the precision focus sensor on your 20d I guess if the lower precision focus is good enough for you then you made the right choice.
With the 20d and 1D high precision focus sensors at f2.8 and faster, I always shoot with a fast lens when possible even if its really bright out.

i got mine today and did some testing vs a very sharp 24-70 on the 1Dsmk2. It was dusk by the time I got home but will repeat my studies tomorrow before posting my opinions. From my early results, there are plus and minuses compared to the 24-70 but I want to be sure before I post my results.
Finally some FF tests looking forward to see how this lens performs on an FF camera.
I never really noticed a difference between the high precision AF sensors for 2.8 lenses versus f/4 lenses that I have had. Maybe there is a noticeable difference to some people, but to me I haven't seen it in real like shooting.
Well, I shot some more snaps today with this lens on my 20D (some are very boring but were taken to see how the lens performed). There were very contrasty shooting conditions. I still like it a lot for general walk-around use, although it does not blow me away like my primes. I processed these in Adobe Camera Raw this time, and I have to say I prefer RSE to ACR, but wanted to see how they came out with ACR.
Thanks Michael- my daughter is quite used to having my camera in my face by now! She even takes shots on her own cheap P&S, and was posing her doll this morning on the couch for a shot - I loved it.
Andrew, I paid $1133 at Pro Photo in Portland, OR.
Talking about prices - this lens is one of the unique examples that something (I mean photographic equipment) can be cheaper in Canada than in the USA: it costs CAN$1410 in some stores here.
Once again, thank you for sharing Peter.
if that is the case, a short drive up from Eugene to Vancouver BC to purchase the lens might be in order, plus i can stop along the way and get some shots at great locations
The exchange rate for the Canadian dollar is quite strong to the US dollar at this time plus British Columbia charges a 7% GST and a 7% PST tax. Combine this with a 6 hour drive from Eugene and gas at close to $3.00 a gallon US. When all the charges are combined the lens is much cheaper in the US.

This may or may not help, but Non Residents of Canada can claim back the 7% GST in some instances:
