I just got back from a six day trip in central Vermont. The family and I stayed near Barnard, VT which is just north of Woodstock. The weather sucked in general. The best day this week was Wednesday when the sun did peak out for about 20 minutes through some high cirrus. The color around Woodstock is horrid. Some trees are already sticks. The best color was when we took a drive up to Peacham near St Johnsbury. There was some very nice color off Route 302 between Orange and Groton.
Also, I was able to meet up with Mahesh in Woodstock yesterday afternoon. It was great to hang out for a while and talk some shop.
Looks like the classic VT colors will have to wait until next season.
If you are going to Vermont this year, there ARE good colors -- but they are only in certain regions. Specifically, the north central area of the state is best. Near and north of Stowe, VT.
The southern parts of the state are just turning and there will be some good spots there as well, most likely peaking in about 7-10 days. --c
Exactly Charles. I didn't mean to imply that all of Vermont has poor color. There are good spots, you just have to drive around. It varies from valley to valley and mountain to mountain. The color off Rte 302 in northern VT was beautiful. After this storm system passes through by Sunday, next week should be quite nice. Get out and shoot!
Living here on Cape Cod, the leaves are so far behind down here, that they haven't even begun to change. Its still all green. Color should peak here around Nov 15th at the rate this season is going... normally peak on the Cape is Halloween.
I found the colors north of stowe poor, but perhaps the best in the state. New York looks much better. Although some areas in New York suffer the same "warm nights" problem as Vermont.
But if you like brown and flat yellow mixed with green, by all means travel to Vermont. There are tender annuals still healthy and in bloom in Stowe - this explains the leaf color condition.
And there's always the saturation control in photoshop.......
Green, Green, Green. We've had nothing but rain, rain, rain until yesterday when the sun decided to make a last minute debut late in the day. The sky was absolutely beautiful (heart stopping) in Brookline yesterday evening, but I digress.
There just isn't any color down here yet. I thought about going back to Maine but I'm staying in Boston next weekend for the annual "Head of the Charles" regatta.
In case anyone is interested, one of the largest regattas will take place here in Cambridge this coming weekend. Rowers come from all over the world to compete, with the college teams going head-to-head as well (Go Yale!). It's really quite a large event, and weather permitting, thousands of people will be here to enjoy the races. In case there still isn't any color, if anyone is in town for the week end it will be a lot of fun.
Very easy to find – go to Harvard and walk 200 yards until you hit water.
I'm in Southern Vermont (and grew up in central Maine) and this is the worst year for foliage I can ever remember. We should have had our peak last weekend, but all we have now is yellow and brown, and a lot of trees haven't even started changing. Of course, the 16 inches of rain we got last week didn't help!
I look forward to seeing some fall foliage, even if it is just in photographs.
