p.6 #1 · New England Fall Foliage Meet

It's like playing the lottery really. I have seen years when the colors were late and it turned out to be a great showing but in general if the colors haven't started to peak by Columbus day they are just going to shrivel and drop off. There will be spots that will be nice but you have to look around for them. From info I have been able to glean extended winters or cold fronts in the spring and a dry hot summer usually result in too much chlorophyl in the stems of the leaves and they usually die before they change color.

Hey all,

has there been any discussion on where and when some of us might meet up for some shooting? I'll be travelling with a friend and we'd be interested in a group gathering. Here's a list of where we will be staying:

10/11 - Nashua, NH (only cause its close to the airport and my friend doesnt get in until after it'll be dark)

10/12 - Lincoln, NH

10/13 - Killington, VT

10/14 - Killington, VT

10/15 - Portland, ME

Hi guys... I am in far northern VT right now and the color is actually very nice. The weather is cruddy but if you are creative there are TONS of photo ops to take advantage of. --c

Nice shots, John. I recognize some of them as being from the Olden Dayze when we used to occasionally have sunshine in New England.

Isn't Mahesh around now? I think he brought Seattle with him. --c

Well, when I left Seattle, it was sunny and warm. When I arrived in Boston, it was sunny and warm. When I left New England, the rain had started and now it is here in Seattle. I was shocked to hear about the turn in the weather since I left. I Hope that the leaves survive the deluge so that those of you heading that way have something to photograph.

Thanks for the kind words. Here are a few more from my trip:

p.6 #9 · New England Fall Foliage Meet

I spent last weekend in Portland Maine and the color was so-so. It is starting to turn along the coast (nice, but not impressive). Reportedly it's going to be better inland from what they were saying on the news up there.

As of this writing, Boston is still pretty green for the most part. Some trees are beginning to show some signs of color while others show nothing, and a few have already dropped their leaves completely. It hasn't been a great Fall for color yet, but there's always some hope until the leaves are gone.

The bad new - weather is a problem right now. Western MA and lower NH/VT are expecting 3-6 inches of rain today/tomorrow, with the storm moving east to Boston by Thursday night. Friday will be a washout according to this mornings report.

The good news - rain may be gone after Friday's deluge and we could have a nice weekend with Sunday expected to be the better of the two days.

As we all know, this can change rapidly so plan accordingly.

It is still raining cats & dogs all throughout MA and southern NH. I also heard that CT to NY city is miserable. And we have 3 more days of this according to the weather reports.

This is as of noon on Wednesday, October 12th.

Still raining in New York. I am home sick looking out my window and I can barely see 25 feet it's been raining so hard. I think the deluge will be over Monday or Tuesday of next week... This is quite depressing....

This is all my fault guys. I was looking forward to my trip too much.

I did get a lot of shots, but none of them look like John's. --c

Vermont is having a bad color year. It's not going to improve. Upstate New York looks better. I was in Utica yesterday andit looked like a normal New England color progression. In a week or two that area will be great. I'm in central Vermont now and all I can say is "yuck".

SW Vermont is in pretty much the same shape as Utica (which makes sense, same latitude and rough elevation.) The northern part of VT is quite nice. The central area is having a very bad year. --c

I was up in Pittsburgh new Hampshire all last week. The trees were peak, but there was no great color. All the leaves were motteled, taking away from the color. I only saw one moose in the week, and that was at night.i got some fox photos and will post them later.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, Ray. This is really a season where if one area looks bad you need to try another. In particular, higher elevations are doing better this year. Someone on a foliage board I hang out on posted some nice pix from the Kancamagus with good color. --c

Yes, the Kancamagus was good and I would also recommend Hwy 108 (Mountain Road) out of Stowe. If nothing else, you can stop on the way for a tour of Ben and Jerry's

ya, my gf and I were planning on heading up north tomorrow. But because of the heavy rain, we decided not to go. Maybe next weekend or something... I do want to stop in LL Beans.

if not, looks like Central Park will be the only time I get to see some colors this Fall.

I'll be up that that way (near I-89 / I-91 VT/NH) this weekend... I hope at least one of the days looks nice.
