After a couple of cool nights with scattered frost in the higher elevations, there is now widespread early color in the Missisquoi valley. Here at our home near Essex Junction, the tips of branches near treetops are showing hints of color now - see my "barometer" trees below. The season is about 7-10 days behind average, but it is good-to-go now!
That's my good-for-the-next-five-minutes report for the week.

Everyone has his favorite spots, and since you mentioned
Fryeburg, I'd love to see what someone with your talent could
do with the valley view behind the Oxford House Inn in the
center of Fryeburg. One of the prettiest vistas I know. The
food there is great too. Not far from Conway and by the
time you're there all the hullaballoo from the Fryeburg Fair --
or "fay-ah," as the locals say -- will have died down.

Barbara and I drove up to Stowe for lunch today, and to see how the foliage is looking. Here is a view of the Mt. Mansfield ridgeline from the Smugglers Notch Road just below the hairpin turns. (By-the-way, McCarthy's is great for breakfast and lunch, and if staying in Stowe, do not miss the Partridge Inn for dinner! Both are on the Mountain Road.)
I'm from Massachusetts and I took a trip up to VT last weekend to Stratton, and I didn't see much foliage change. I'm thinking about taking some vacation and repeating my trip again Oct 10th through 14th... I bought the 70-200mm f/4L lens and I'm itching to get some good foliage shots with it.
Do you think next week will be better peak season in VT?
I'd love to meet up with everyone as well, but I'm such a novice with all of this, I'd probably get lost in the translation, not the drive up Perhaps it will be a good learning experience for me!
I've been travelling through Vermont and New Hampshire since Saturday, based in Lebanon, New Hampshire. In a nutshell, there is a little color but only a little. We travelled to Burlington, VT today and saw some promise along the way. Tomorow, we will try the Kancamagus. I'll let you know what we find. Oh, it has been in the upper 70s to lower 80s which is a bit on the warm side for this time of year.
I am thinking of going to Jenne Farm just south of Woodstock VT a week from this Friday, Oct. 14th to do a early morning shoot. From what I am hearing and seeing here the color is late this year. What do you Vermonters think of the timing for the Jenne Farm area?
In Northern Vermont, Jay Peak and the surrounding high elevations are at or near peak now. Color continues to improve in the lower valleys, and the rate of increase appears to be accelerating. The next two weeks look like the right time to be here, as peak foliage moves steadily from North to South. Be prepared to move around a bit, as there will be a lot of variation between higher and lower elevations and wet and dry conditions. Colors are definitely losing their vibrancy in mid-day, so try to catch early morning light and the last half hour of sunset.
My "barometer trees" that I posted previously are coming along, but this week I will post instead a photo taken in a lower, wetter area about 1000 feet away from our home. This was morning light, and as you can see colors here are developing well.

Robert, I can't speak specifically of the Woodstock area as I have not been down there. I suggest you stay overnight and talk to your local innkeeper there - they generally have good advice for their guests. I would think that there should be a good chance of finding color somewhere in that area around the 14th. As I said above, you may have to range about a bit.
Well, we were able to see and photograph a young bull moose yesterday along "Moose Alley" aka Hwy 3 in Northern NH late yesterday. The colors in the north are fantastic and spreading rapidly south. We are heading to Stowe tomorrow.
I just returned from NH visiting a relative. Didnt get to take any photos as the weather was bad but did a little sight seing on the way back to I-90. The colors this year probably are not going to be much of a show unfortunately. When the colors are late the leaves usually go past prime without really changing to brilliant color. This is no doubt due to the late season snows that ocurred in April and the very warm and dry weather. This is as bad as I have seen it in a decade. It looks like autumn is just going to fall away in the NE. 2001 was the the last really outstanding year for color. The past few years have been dissapointing.
i agree mike. from what ive seen, they are going from green, to brown, to dead.
there's a few species of trees that are hitting orange and yellow but not many.
im a bit disappointed as this was going to be my first foliage season but i'll just have to wait for next year
