p.1 #1 · New England Fall Foliage Meet

I'll be photographing the New England fall foliage, mostly in Maine and Vermont, this year from October 8th through the 19th. Anyone wanting to join me is more than welcome. We can make it an east coast FM get-together, if you will. Please reply to this post, PM me, or send me an e-mail if you are interested.

Tentative general group meeting dates and places: Will vary depending on individual schedule

If the 15th and/or 16th don't work out for everyone, and individuals still want to meet up with me or others separately, that would be ok too. Let's use this thread to coordinate the plans so anyone logging on can see the arrangements.

Visit www.photographamerica.com and get Robert Hitchman's following back issues:

#2: Autumn Color in Vermont
#13: Acadia and the Coast of Maine
#53: Autumn in New Hamshire

I also recemmend getting Delorme maps of the states you intend to visit...they have excellent back road maps.

Any other suggestions out there?

I've finally made all the arrangements for myself. Anyone wanting to join me is more than welcome. Since my main reason for this trip is to photograph the fall foliage, I've decided to concentrate most of my time in Vermont and a little bit in New Hamshire and Maine. I don't have plans to visit Acadia NP (been there, done that ).

In a somewhat counterclockwise loop from Boston, for the first 2/3 of the trip, I'll be concentrating on the areas around North Woodstock, NH; St. Johnsbury, VT; Stowe, VT; and Woodstock, VT. I will then go to Portland, Maine. I plan to head up to Oquossac and work my way south through Upton, Bethel, and Fryeburg, taking lots of backroads. The following is my itinerary. I'll have my cell phone with me (206-250-7944). Call, PM or e-mail me and let's see if a few of us can meet up, if not for photography, then just for dinner.

Sunday 9th: Arrive in Boston @ 6:46 am. Stay in Lyndonville, VT @ Lynburke Motel 802-626-3346

Monday 10th: Stay in Lyndonville, VT @ Lynburke Motel 802-626-3346

Tuesady 11th: Stay in Stowe, VT @ The Farm Resort and Golf Course 802-888-3523

Wednesday 12th: Stay in Stowe, VT @ The Farm Resort and Golf Course 802-888-3523

Thursday 13th: Stay in Killington (20 min west of Woodstock), VT @ Val Roc Motel 800-238-8762

Friday 14th: Stay in Killington (20 min west of Woodstock), VT @ Val Roc Motel 800-238-8762

Saturday 15th: Stay in Conway, NH @ Saco River Motor Lodge 603-447-3720

Sunday 16th: Stay in Portland, ME @ Ramada Limited 1150 Brignton Ave Portland, ME 04102 888-872-8356 or 207-775-3711

Monday 17th: Stay in Bethel, ME Pleasant River Motel 764 W. Bethel Rd, Route 2 West 800-847-7786

Tuesday 18th:Stay in Boston, MA with some friends

Wednesday 19th: Leave for Seattle 7:50 am

I haven't quite decided where I should fly into. Should I fly into Boston and then take a drive up north or should I just fly directly into Maine or Vermont? Any input would be appreciated. We should also decide on a central place to meet. I'm open to suggestions, as I'me not very familiar with the area. I recommend the weekend of the 15th and 16th for everyone to meet, if not for photography then atleast for dinner and good conversations . I've also decided to exend my stay till the 19th of October to give myself ample opportunit to be there during the peak colors. If the 15th or 16th doesn't work out for everyone, and individuals still want to meet up with me or others separately, that would be ok too. Let's use this thread to coordinate the plans so anyone logging on can see the arrangements. I'll make it a point to edit my first post with the most up-to-date info. I'm so excited!

Hi Mahesh,

I'll be in New England from the 9th through the 16th. We fly into Boston from San Francisco at 6:30 am on the 9th. We'll be spending the first 2 nights near Woodstock, Vermont. The 11th and 12th we'll be in central New Hampshire (Kancamagus Highway and Little Squam Lake) and the last part of our trip will be in Acadia National park. It would be great to meet up with you if you're going to be in any of those areas.

John, you and I get into Boston almost at the exact same time (see my note above). I too plan to go to Woodstock, Vermont first for a few days...I've heard that's the place to begin the fall foliage journey. How much do you know about the area? I'd love to meet up with you and do some shooting together. This is gonna be sooooo cool!

Count me in too!

I live in New England and by haven't been up to Acadia at that time of year.

The biggest concern may be finding places to stay in the area as the tourists travel to follow the peak colors too. Of course, the current gas prices may put a crimp in this.

Keep udating here and I'll plan on joining and providing local help if necessary.

I was in New England 3 years ago. We spent two days in Woodstock as well as visiting North Conway, New Hampshire and the coast of Maine. It was a great trip. Lot's of photographic opportunities!

Here's a few shots from my last trip.

Mahesh; John:

I'm from upstate NY and would like to link into the Vermont part of the trip. I'll just be coming back from a trip to the SW with Icypeak, but would like to free up a couple of days to catch some of you in Vermont.

I'm out of town and don't have time to post in detail right now but off the top of my head the timing sounds pretty late for northern New England. Certainly at the higher elevations the color will be past peak by October 10th or so, even in southern VT and NH. You will need to be in the valleys by then. Most of Maine is earlier, not sure about Acadia and on the coast.

Of course every season is different but still...by the 15th and 16th usually the color is past peak everywhere north of Massachusetts except right on the coast and in places like Bennington and the CT River valley from Brattleboro up to White River Junction. --c

Mahesh,

Be sure to drive north of Woodstock a bit to the small village of Barnard. My wife and I have been up in this area (also Woodstock itself) several times. Its very beautiful.

I hope this season is a good one. Columbus Day weekend is usually the peak in Woodstock.

I'm interested in meeting up but I could not make the 15/16th.

According to the following link which provides fall foliage information (including the peak times for the previous years), it looks like I will probably be there during the best time.
