My friend and neighbor works for CSX Transportation, and sent me these pictures. I have been overwhelmed by the devastation of Katrina, and this further underscores it. I'm also somewhat of a train buff, so I was really interested in these photos.
It's going to take a while before the railroads are back to 100% operation in the New Orleans area, just like every other service. All the track is going to need to be inspected and undoubtedly repaired. With the damage I see there, the track surface is going to need to be drained, possibly undercut, reballasted, and realigned. Just an amazing amount of work and money will need to be poured into the area. Everyone's prayers are with the south.
Hey Jack,
I feel like you're a "new" friend since you helped me out with the 80-400VR this week and I just came on line to see these pictures. WOW!! Three days ago I was really excited about my new lens and couldn't wait to get out and shoot some pics. Well, I saw all the pictures on the news and read some of the stories coming out of "Katrina" and your pics and my new lens lost it's sparkle for me. SO, I called the Salvation Army here in CT.today and will be leaving on Sept. 9th to give something back to people who's immediate needs don't include a new lens. Yes, I am taking the lens but will only get a rare oppurtunity to use it when I'm not cooking or whatever else I can do to help. Maybe some of the other people here will take a moment like I did, look at your pictures and put their "wish list" in perspective. When I get back on the 20th of Sept. I'll get some of my pics posted, (remember I still shoot film!!). I'm sure that these pictures woke up a lot of us.
If any one wants to help with the Salvation Army in New England the person to speak to is: Chris Baker at 860-543-8400. 10 DAYS ALL EXPENSE PAID TRIP!!
