p.2 #1 · Model in flag

Going back to the subject (i.e., critiquing the photograph), I find pose cliche regardless of whether or not this treatment of the flag is OK.

It is just a piece of cloth. Don't take my comments out of context. I also said it is what it represents and what it means to you that carries weight. The bible is just a bunch of pieces of paper bound together, but it is what it stands for that brings it weight and meaning. Likewise with any symbol - someone using it as a prop changes nothing.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is FM not a VFW meeting discussing 'proper' use of the flag.

Apart from the flag controversy, looking also at the picture of the two models in the beach seems to me the faces are pretty soft.
On this particular one I see nothing that could prompt me to make a good comment.

It would have upset me if it were used in some derogatory way. But the US flag is probably the most commercialized symbol in the world, you can find it on everything from hats to soft drink cans to underwear. If you want to get all upset about the use of the flag, there are a LOT worse examples to target.

p.2 #6 · Model in flag

I find this recent posters constant posting of sub par "model" pictures to be quite annoying. Every post has only one picture, it's always too small, looks like it was shot at F99, always paired with "What do you think?" and nothing else. I have yet to see him post in his own threads or contribute anything to the forum at all. It just seems like someone who is overly excited about working with these girls and trying to "brag" in some odd way.

And Mychael: I completely agree with what you just said.

this 'flag not touching the ground' is ridiculous.
I can't believe I'm even hearing this from grown ups.
I say that it is too soft / if it's PS whatever . . .I also feel it would be better if she were standing so you saw her legs

It's what that flag stands for not the flag itself that upsets us.
So don't take it at such a piss poor attitude.

Preach on Brother! I agree 100% May I take this time to thank anyone reading this that has served our country.

I am a proud American and have no problem with the flag issue. Art is Art. Let's keep politics out of it.

The photo, however, is pretty poor IMO.

Yes, and people have the right to act like idiots, just like you're doing. I'd put my military service and my families history of service to the country up against anyone. I've had a family member in every major conflict and war since WWI. So 'luck' has nothing to do with me being able to say whatever the F I want to, jackass. I hope you get this upset every other time the flag is used on anything but a flagpole.

It's just a flag, there are more important issues to worry about than this.....Besides the photo isn't very interesting flag or no flag, she's soft and out of focus and the jeans need to go.

Mychael Ray,
I can tell by the words you use, your a great American.
Mine goes even futher back I just mentioned the ones I knew
in person, but I'm not going to call you
names. IMO this or any other misuse of the flag you should
be upset about or maybe you just served your country because you
where told to. My family we're all volunteers so don't
go throwing your holier than thou attitude at me.
I have just as much right to complain about the way the flag is
treated as you do to use your great use of the english language to
express yourself.

robbie20D,
My response to Mychael Ray should of been Woopee also.
I'll make everyone happy and not post again. I'm not sorry
about how I feel, just that it wasted a lot of forum space and time.

You should go back and edit your post to try and make it even less clear as to who you were responding to. That would be fun. :o

All of you need to lighten up.
This is a photography forum, please discuss and criticize the photography, not your, or anyone else's politics.

As for the shot, it is too soft. I would prefer that the background was more interesting. Also, the model appears to be bored, showing no emotion.
I would also prefer that her legs were either more visible or completely hidden. It kind of looks like her legs have been chopped off or that she is hovering.

I think it would be a much stronger shot if she was standing, with her legs apart, either looking down, or directly at the camera with her head straight.

Holdenman, I agree that from a sociological perspective, it is a curiosity - but one easily understood, looking back a mere 200 years....the blink of an eye. Born in blood, that flag. Patriotism here is an understandable side-effect from the US's standard history classes, mandatory in schools, telling the tale of those who went through a wee tad of trouble for its future citizens. Watching the news these days, you may wonder if all of the recent US administrations paid attention in those history classes, I'll give you that...and it's pretty sketchy, true, that this nation's founding fathers ideas likely didn't have Baywatch re-runs or 50-Cent's un-doing of grammar classes in mind when writing about freedoms of speech...but also, looking elsewhere in the world, they didn't hardly do a bad job comparably. The flag, here, is something to revere, to understand, and sometimes weep before, the memory of the losses endured. We're a proud bunch, for all the right reasons, in the end, I think.

That said, yes, it's inappropriate in this shot. But, overall, the shot ain't bad. Agreed re the focus, though if you use the Blur tool on the hands, you'll lose some of the effect. The lighting is great, though the star field in the flag does show light bleed...and the blue in the jeans does detract from the implied upper nudity.
