p.1 #1 · [Off Topic] How I Pack My Bag

I'm guilty of going off topic. Some guys in another forum mentioned not being able to fit much into their Lowepro Mini Trekker (a great lttle bag). I was suprised, and always felt mine was good and had plenty of space.

They asked to see of my photo packed (my "boogie bag"). I did one better and posted a video. it's 1.7mb, and please right click and save the file rather than view it over and over on my bandwidth please.

http://www.mackstyle.net/minitrekker.mov

The other guys seemed to get a kick out of it, and gave me an idea. I will now call my bag Tardis, apparently after this deceivingly large transport thing Dr. Who used.

The desk is a very hard wood, pretty much anything tapping it makes that sound. But yes, in general I do not baby my gear. I have faith in the build quality of most of my lenses and equipment.

Cept for that damn 550ex. That thing musta been made out of popsicle sticks by a monkey or something. Seriously, Canon needs to make an L flash, GN 70 for the guys who have to shoot long distance press conference stuff, and made out of a polycarbonate, like the 10 or 20D. It would probably cost 600 bucks, but if I knew I could toss it around, it might be worth it.

Thanks for that! I have been looking to get one of them. Its hard to look at specs and actually know how much will fit but you have just proved that that bag will be plenty lol.

Thanks again,
Daniel

ps. that would weigh A LOT

! I am looking for that balance of speed and ease. You got the easy part down! Can you find what you need fast?

I'm getting better, but I still baby my gear big time!

Holy sh*t! Max, there's got to be some kind of prize for that performance. I thought I packed my bag full, but I never realized the mini trekker had so much room in the outer pocket. That thing must weigh a ton! And do you put the same stuff in the same place every time so you can be efficient when you need to reach a specific item? or did you just stuff it full to show what it can hold? Hey, I have a lowepro lens case that attaches to the side of the bag. You probably could fit your bike in there .

Well, now I'm going to have to try it for myself....

I always take out what I need to shoot with, and leave small knickknacks in a cargo pocket in my jeans or shorts.

From there, I move the lenses and stuff from the little pocket to the main compartment, since the 300 and 70-200 plus the 2 bodies are out. I also take out the 3rd body sometimes (bball) or move it.

The key for me is to know my itinerary. For example, I will unpack a little in the car, if I know I gotta jam the second I get out. If it's a Suns game, I get there 2 hours early, and set up 15 minutes before tipoff.

Once I unpack, I can usually find what I need pretty easily. Packing is only about getting to the event with the gear, from there it's about placement and repacking that keeps things handy.

Oh ya, further notice: I used to be a Boy Scout. I still remember the motto

Be Prepared.

I love overpacking. It helped me lose a considerable amount of weight. I ran around events all day with this stuff. And I always thought about getting sliplock attachments, but there's not much I else I'd need to bring along. I keep a lenspen, a Hakuba CF hardcase and about 8 gigs of CS on me in my cargos. I always love more pockets, yet somehow I don't like vests.

Oh, and when I do a double stint, I can often be seen carrying the boogie bag, and a PortaBrace bag with my PD-170, a mic, wireless audio kit, a light, a few batteries, a charger, wide angle adapter, extra 9v batteries and tapes.

Oh and a tripod or monopod (or both, the Mini Trekker has a way to carry a monopod in the middle of the back).

And I can run fairly fast with all of it (mostly because I'm no speedster normally).

I'll see if someone can grab a pic of me carrying this rig sometime.

Max,

I was surprised to see you bringing the 1D+300 out of that bag as I was told by several retailers and even Lowepro customer service that the Mini Trekker won't take a 1-series body with lens mounted due to the depth of the bag.

Do you know if the Mini Trekker would take a 1D with 24-70 attached and another 1D with 70-200 f2.8 IS attached? Preferably with a divider to keep them from bumping each other. And hoods in the shooting position? If so then I need to get one of these bags as I'm currently "travelling light" with a regular rucksack that offers practically zero protection.

Here's the key to fitting things right:

1) Don't baby your gear. The 1 Series and L class stuff has been to wars (literally).

The main compartment could take 2 bodies with lenses, but it would be a loose fit... which I don't like for that part of the bag. Perhaps if you added some smaller lenses to fit in the small spaces.

I like the min trekker because it does not go past the waist, or too high. In retrospect, I may have gone for the roller version, but I find it fits on my back perfectly.

BTW, a simple test, but I have a Norman P2000D, and it weights 29lb, I believe this weights a bit more (perhaps 35lb)

If anyone cares to ballpark it, I'd love to know. I may find a scale and pop the bag on there to see what I carry around.

Max,
Oye, oye. It is incredible!!!
That looks very heavy. I experience some back problems if I carry my gears for quite sometime. That's why I bought a bag that has rollers to carry the 400/f2.8, 70-200/f2.8, 17-40, 2 - 1series bodies, a spare camera battery, a flash, a monopad, a retracktable seat and a laptop computer with power supply.

Lucky you, I'm going opn a trip with my 600mm - 1.4x - Big Bogen Tripod - Waterhousing - 1DMark II - 550 Flash - waterhousing - 17-35L - 24-85

Anyway, doesn't seem like much, but I'm not going by car and by plane !!!

On a small ferry (Maui to Lanai), so, all that stuff in my regular bag with clothing holding on to it during the channel crossing. People are always being seasick (tourists) during that channel crossing, I guess I'll be happy inside the cabin, so my gear doesn't get wet.

Any tip ?

bosie?

I only carry 2 extra batteries for my 1D's... and the battery for the 10D makes sense since I carrythat too.

The AA batts are for the PW's and 550ex. Only battery that serves no purpose is the one for the ST-e2, but its so small that I always think to carry it just in case I bring the ST-e2 and it konks out on me. It, like my Sekonics battery, is a bit non standard. Having a spare is always smart.

rehale,

Yes in the gear forum I told everyone this would be the photographic version of the VW beetle with clowns pouring out of it.
