Sorry to upset you. And of course I didn't mean that you in particular held preconceived opinions. You asked for comments I gave mine.
I considered buying the Contax Zeiss 21mm last week, but after a recent experience with Contax Zeiss 25mmf2.8 I just purchased (cost me $541, failed test against 16-35L, badly) I would rather not make another mistake at a cost of $3500.
NO SIR, No thank you!
Its up for sale if you want a mint 25mmf2.8 I would sell it now for $400.00 based on what I have seen of its performance. After a brief foray into the exotic world of Contax Zeiss, I think there is a reason why canon is still in business....Show more →
10tenths,
You erred! The 25mm doesn't, AFAIK, have many reports of special worth in comparison to Canon glass.
The absolute bargain is the 28mm 2.8 distagon which I promise wont disappoint you. It is a wonderful lens and you will be impressed and hooked.
Better, you can pick up one in excellent to mint condition, probably manufactured with the past year or a little earlier for about $240!
Just like to express my appreciation to Mike for taking the time and effort to do the test, generously sharing out his test results and emailing some FF shots to me for detailed examination.
Thanks Mike!
Just some observation on the comparison of O21 and CZ21 at wide aperture for 1.6 crop camera like 20D:
f2: O21 is very soft throughout and unusable as far as I'm concerned.
f2.8: At the centre, both lenses have comparable sharpness with the CZ having noticable higher contrast. At the edge, of the 1.6 crop. CZ21 is noticably sharper than the O21.
Interestingly my 25/2.8 fares somewhat better rez-wise than my now gone 17-40L, and definitely better flare- and contrast-wise. But as mentioned above, it's not known as one of the outstanding CZ lenses.
