I recently sent my 50mm f1.8 AF lens to Nikon, Torrance for oil on the aperature blades. The blades were too sticky for the lens to stop down quick enough for use. The lens is 8 months out of warranty and I explained to Nikon that they should cover this repair under warranty as it is a manufacturer defect.
I just received a letter from Nikon stating that the repair will be covered under warranty. Cool. I was under the assumption that the lens has a 5 year warranty, but on the statement it says "DOP 1/17/00 + YR EXT". I assume this means the Date of Purchase was 1/17/00 with extended warranty. I know I didn't purchase an extended warranty so maybe they just code this when they are being nice and want to cover an out of warranty item under warranty.
I'm just happy my 50mm is being repaired free of charge. Thanks Nikon from a very satisfied customer.
Nikon service has be excellent for me. I had a focusing problem with my D70 Kit lens. They payed for shipping in, replaced it, and shipped the new one back to me air. Really nice on the phone as well.
