The lighting isn't that great in the red shirt images, but from my screen the expodisc/hicksdisc image does show a red tint. (You can definately see the bias with the wall that I'm assuming is supposed to be white.)
Now image what that would do to skin tone if someone was wearing that shirt, or worse still a blue shirt.

AJ , if you look really close in this image you will see the true colors of everything in the room , the red shirt was hung from the white door to the left of the image . I see no bias towards red in this image . the only bias i see might be AJ . I never said this was a better way just an alternitive to carrying a big card in your pack or pocket ,that if dropped it the water ,or mud ,or coke is spilled on it it can be washed off and not get affected and it will fit in the pocket of your red shirt. All I have done is found something that works , and presented it to ya'll for info for you to use , how you see fit.
OK,
A little clarification. Do I shoot a frame with the disk on, then use that frame to set Custom WB
in the camera or when I convert the raw image.(using the eyedropper thing in ACR). My normal workflow is to include a grey card in a shot, then when I convert the raw image I just click on the grey card and use that for the WB of all of the subsequent shots. Maybe thats wrong, but it seems to work for me.
Thanks
Hi , Rick if that's working for you then you may not want to change . I just try to get it as correct in cam as I can . yes shoot an image then use that image to set WB . I use this method for when I.m shooting at zoos and stuff when I'm doing my snake and reptile shots , you always have different lights in each . some may have 3 to 4 different lights in each cage . this tool will give you a balance of all the light so you don't have green, red blue or yellow cast to the shots , if you are going to use a flash , be sure and have it fire when doing the wb shot or you will be off. it also kind of hard to set wb with a card or any type of flat wb tool when your subject is behind glass and the light doesn't hit the card , with the tool you can put it over the lens then point it directly
at the light source take your shot and wala, you have a near perfect exposure.
Thanks for posting a pic! What is the material with the diamond shape? It looks kind of like the diffusing material used on fluroescent lighting. Is that what it is?

I made a version similar but used 2 layers of coffee filters and the same diffusion material from the fluorescent lighting.
I sandwiched the coffee filters between the plastic diffusion material and a UV filter. A 72-77mm step up ring screws into the UV filter to hold it all together.
I will have to try it against a gray card to see how it compares.
So if I'm right,
This is made up of 2 glass filters, 1 piece of the 3m product and 1 piece of the Home depot diffusion product sandwiched between the glass filters?
