First I very much appreciate your comments views on the 14n. There is way to much noise out there. Good photos too. As you are an active Nikon D1x user with the 14n. I was curious about your experience using the 14n at 6 megapixels. One of the unique features of this camera is the ability to have variable resolution RAW files. At 6 megapixels, how does the image compare between teh D1x and the 14n, How much do the noise characteristics improve? I would appreciate your insight on this angle. Thanks.
John, I shot a series of 6-MP pics with the 14n and the D1x, and they are quite comparable. Now, I should add that since the Capture upgrade, I set the default on my NEF files to 10 MP and never change it. So now that you mention it, I'm not doing a valid comparison. Hummm. I'll shoot the same subject with both and not save the NEF at 10 MP and let you know. I suspect that the NEF will show snappier contrast and the 14n will show a higher dynamic range, but that's just my guess.
While I'm down South next week, I'll shoot with both cameras and have a comparison project to post. That should be interesting.

What should that mean? I use also C1 for my 1Ds photos, C1 is the current benchmark for a great raw converter. If the flaws that Michael showed exist with the 14n then this has nothing to do with the software he used on the Canon side.
Jeff, when we did side-by-side 14n, 1Ds, and D1x shots of the same subject, we found (as Steve found) that the 14n tends toward magenta, the 1Ds tends toward green, and the D1x is right in the middle. Unless you compare 3 images side-by-side, you tend to think that they are individually accurate. That was with the first firmware. I've noticed on the latest firmware that the magenta tendency is less so than before. Outdoor shots still tend to be cool.

all this talk of noise, just wanted to mention the 1ds isn't totally clean either even at 100 ISO The noise however is very dependent on the software used for the conversion. I can only speak to my camera. Others claim no noise but I also feel these are possible shots not being viewed at 100%
Paul, that's interesting info. Maybe Phase One will eventually process 14n RAW files too. I think Peter is traveling today and for the next couple of days. He may have access to e-mail, though I can't guarantee it.
Actually I didn't pay attention, I found them on Bearcat's server.
They are not full res. shots, from the 14n, more like 10 x 6, but that should matter. They are fine. I don't see any issues. The Chinatown shot is clean, I looked hard for noise, but just don't see it. The other point of interest is that these are so much better than any other images shown in any reviews. Especially Steve's Digicams. His images by far are the worst, again just look at the bark details on the palms or the fronds. Then comes imaging resouces, which falls somewhere inbetween.
Kodak should be using Peter's stuff, or yours, I don't get why they can't get more positive stuff up.
Paul, with the target market being studio, wedding, product photogs, Peter's pictures and only a few of mine would be useful. That's my guess. The best that our shots show is that the camera is a jewel for many stock photography images.

I would like to view your full res images. At this time I have one server sitting empty and idle and would be pleased to have you FTP a couple of your full res images to my site for viewing by all. I have a 5G transfer allocation which is virtually unused at this time, so that is not a problem. The server restricts file size to 100 MB, so I can accept at least a couple full size images for display and evaluation which I will annotate appropriately, according to the values given me.
