let's say you save $20.00 or even $40.00 bucks on a 3rd party battery (you've already spent a ton on your current list right?), is it worth it to risk what some of these cheapies have done in terms of failures?
i'm sure Bonito will have a good link for us all, but having read your threads in the past, you certainly are one of the more intelligent members here, so i'm a little astounded that your being a cheapskape on this...

Mark,
I've had very good luck (with a 1D) with the Black Diamond version of this battery sold at www.mydigitaldiscount.com. I'm thinking it's around $30. Also just noticed that B&H has a few used for $79 (still steep as far as I'm concerned).
Do not get one of these batteries....very poor design. Three were included with a used 1Ds I purchased recently. The pins from the charger push the batteries metal connector inside the battery. Eventually you can't charge it. The battery seal is also very poor.
The non Canon batteries are usualy $50-$70 cheaper and if someone knows of a good one, I would be interested as well..

I don't know which battery your 1D uses,
but for my 10D, Walmart sells a battery that beats Canons battery in longevity
and price (had 4 over a year now with no problems). They were only $15 each

I don't envy the 1-series owners for battery choice. The BP-511 is great in that even if you buy the cheapest generic battery from eBay, it will work just as good as the OEM Canon one. The aftermarket NP-E3's seem to suffer from fit and sealing problems, as well as being of questionable longevity.

nah not a cheapskate.. just trying to maximize spending dollars
Seriously though... I know when I had my 10D, there were MANY good reliable third party batteries...SterlingTek, Maha, etc... but none of them make 1D batteries.
I thought maybe there was a third party out there that people here knew about that was up to par in terms of quality with the OEM units. I have no reservations about buying a Canon battery, but if there is a viable alternative that doesnt sacrifice quality, I'd like to consider that as well.
Oh...and thanks for the compliment I really enjoy this forum and everyone here has been very helpful. Top notch community!

yep - youre exactly right... hence my quest to see if there is a viable third party offering....but there looks like it may not exist.

If you go to the mydigitaldiscount website and look up the black diamond battery, you will see that it has been redisigned to eliminate the problems callaway mentions.
I don't have any stock in your choice of battery, but you asked the question and I'm answering it. I also think there have been quite a few threads on FM where many 1-series DSLR users have praised this battery, claiming not only that it works well, but that it lasts longer than the Canon.

I have used Adorama's generic batteries for Nikon with no problems. I cannot vouch for their generic batteries for Canon, (different technology and less cost savings, too), but here is the link:

These are the very early design Black Diamond batteries sold at MyDigitalDiscount.com. they did indeed have problems with the charging socket and the end cap not fitting the 1D series body well. These problems have been solved, and I can testify to that personally. I have two of these batteries purchased within the last month and they fit perfectly and the charging socket appears identical to the Canon OEM unit in fit and construction.
They're currently $25 each, and for those who still worry about the end caps many of the early versions were fixed by replacing the end caps with ones from worn out OEM Canon batteries and all was well.
