p.1 #1 · Peleng 8mm Fisheye on a 1.6 crop

I know that this lens has been mentioned before, but I thought I'd provide some photos I made recently with it-- borrowed the lens and just went for a walk.

It's really nice to get that fisheye look on a 1.6 crop camera (the 15mm fisheyes don't cover enough range, nor do they provide enough fisheye distortion on a 1.6 crop camera). I didn't expect much from this galss from Belarus... but I'm impressed. Not the sharpest thing on earth, but for the price, it can't be beat.

Cheers and enjoy-- And feel free to add your images made with this lens:

Does it screw onto an existing lens? My father is sending me an old add-on fish that screws onto a 49mm threading. It was leftover from his Rolleiflex.

It should arrive tomorrow and I'm excited to play with it. I tried using it in the early 90's with film, but could never get the exposure right.

This is indeed much fishier than my 16mm Zenitar. What mount is the peleng, do you need an adapter or do they make native canon mount like the zenitar?

It does not screw onto another lens-- it is a stand alone lens. You can find this thing with a built in adaptor for Nikon or Canon (and perhaps other) mounts.

Those look great. What aperture did you use on those? Here are some I took yesterday:

Actually, I'm not positive what aperture I used because I'm not sure if I worked out the "lock" mechanism properly. I tried to shoot at many apertures between 3.5 and 16, but I'm afraid that they were all really 3.5 (I was suprised things looked as bright as they did at f16... they were probably not f/16!).

BTW, your shots are beautiful-- did you crop out the vignetted corners in your shots?

Yeah, this lens is really weird to get used to! I actually spent about 4 days shooting images and being disappointed with the results until I realized that I was focusing incorrectly! To properly lock it, you turn the unlock/lock ring clock-wise all the way (lens facing away from you). You can confirm this by looking through the viewfinder and seeing the image getting darker as you are locking it. Or if the lens is off the body, you'll see the aperture close.

Thanks for the comments! It's not very often any of my pictures are referred to as "beautiful"! I actually used PanoTools (PTMac on Mac OS X) to fix the vignetted corners:

Could anyone share a fisheye picture and then what it looks like "corrected" in Photoshop?

Paoletto, here's a 100% crop (f/8, ISO 200, 1/80s, handheld), shot in JPG, unprocessed. I apologize if it's a little dark, I just opened up my window and shot the house across the street. It's almost sunset right now.

jimhus, here's a non-defished image of one of my pictures from the last page:

Hey, it's the U of C C-train station, downtown, and edgemont/hamptons/mackenzie/tuscany/whatever-new-suburb. I was just getting to appreciate my zenitar 16mm in film when I finally saved the money for the 350D. Time to pick up the zenitar's belarussian cousin, I think. I'd like to regain the true fisheye ability on my dslr.

Cool, another local! You were correct on the first two, but the ramp (I'm guessing that's what you thought was the edgemont/hamptons/...) is actually right outside the U of C station!

I'd highly recommend this lens if you're looking for some good 'fishiness'

I meant the photo out your window (other post), I walk that ramp daily BTW, you have some very nice shots on your website, too.

Indeed. Kievcamera may be getting an order from me within the week.
