p.1 #1 · Who says those FD to EOS adapters suck

Just got the adapter i ebayed from "kiev camera" in the mail today. I'm rather impressed, i didnt have my hopes up especially with all the horrible things i've heard of such adapters. It's really kinda neat to put (and to see) a $2,000 AF camera with an out dated manual focus/apearture lens.

Is there any way that i can change the aperature on the camera in AV mode even though it doesnt see a lens

Camera: 1D

There is no way to adjust the aperture display from 00 with a manual lens.

These pictures seem to indicate good performance from the conversion lens. It would be interesting to see full size crops of centre and edge detail.

Those pics look great. I have a couple of nice FD lenses which I'd love to try on my 10D. Do you have a link to where you bought from?

I have not read much about FD-EOS converters. Sounds like there is a feeling out there that they suck - why?

Thanks
Kev

The reason FD-EOS converters have a bad reputation is because they MUST contain optical elements to work properly, and they change the focal length of the lens in use by (if memory serves) a factor of 1.1. So your 85mm lens becomes a 93.5mm lens, your 200mm lens becomes a 220, etc.

Not only that, but no matter how well-designed the adapter is, it will degrade image quality compared to how the lens performs without an adapter. Depending on other factors, this may or may not degrade quality enough for you to notice it/care about it in typical print sizes.

That said, there wouldn't be a market for these things if nobody bought them. If you're happy with the results, what does it matter?

Would be cool to see some comparisons but I really doubt I would see any improvemnt with my adapted FD 50/1.4 over my EF 50/1.4 - not enough to buy an adaptor and lose AF anyway.
