Is the front component of your lens kind of loose/wobbly and if you shake the lens does it sound kind of clunky?
And when the it's set for 135mm and IS kicks in on a subject does the image in the viewfinder slightly shift into place??
The lens is practically mint and clear but I'm wondering if I got a dud.
Thanks.

Did you get yours used on B&H (condition 9, with box, $299) last week? It may have been the one I just returned. The front element was extremely wobbly and optically, it was not performing up to my expectations as well.
Just to define the acceptable range of 'wobbly', mine moves the most when at 70mm and it's about 1mm from left to right at the front element. Optically, everything is fine.
The shift in the viewfinder happens with the L-IS lenses as well.... it's the image stabilizer in action... normal... a slight hissing and thunk like noise when the IS is on... also normal.
A wobbly front element/glass (if I understand that right) and clunky sounds... if they are coming with IS set to OFF.... not normal....I would call up canon and get a quote/estimate or I would return the lens.
I bought mine within a few months of when the lens was released ('97? '98?). At the wide angle end, it has always had a lot of slack in the zoom helical, and the front group will wobble and clunk if you shake it. Zoomed to 135, the whole thing feels a lot more solid. Functionally, it's still fine. I've put maybe 20,000 exposures on film and digital with this lens, and though it has been largely replaced by 24-70 and 70-200 L beasties, it's still a great lightweight lens. When I do use it, it still works very well for what it is, including good IS.
sounds normal.. mine does the same thing.. I used to leave that lens on the camera 90% of the time untill i bought the sigma 28-70mm f2.8. the 28-135mm lens is a great all around lens.
Just thought I'd check in to give you more support--yep, they all wobble. One guy on the digitaldarkroom forum, I recall from a while back, put some kind of tape on the barrel, because it bothered him so much.
Don't worry. This is a very nice lens. The middle of the zoom range is optimum for h/s portraits. Of course on a 1.6x sensor, this lens is too long on the wide end, so it is not a very good "walkaround" lens.
