It's a flash trigger. Frankly, I can't remember all the details, but I believe the bulk of the design was patterned after the design I found from this site: http://home.rochester.rr.com/carlvogt/Strobe.htm
There are plenty of designs to be found on the web, some quite sophisticated, including ones that can ignore preflashes. The one I built certainly wins on the basis of simplicity.
I haven't used this all that much. I only built it after one of my Wein Peanuts died. I just couldn't bear shelling out more money for another one, knowing that it's a couple of $ in parts and epoxy. I don't know how sensitive it is. It has some trouble triggering under very bright light. I suspect the solar cell is a bit too efficient and may be saturating in those conditions. Then again, the Wein Peanut has the same problem. I think switching to an opaque film cannister but retaining the translucent top would enhance it's sensitivity.
No, the main light was a Sunpak PZ5000AF in a 24"x36" soft box. It has been modified since I took the Pringles can picture a year or so ago. The can itself wouldn't fit on the Sunpaks I have so I added a paper cup to the flash end of it. I lined it inside and out with a ton of black tape. I'll try to take a photo of it in it's current form tommorow .
Yeah, hopefully, this creativity will also show in our photos and we are living testimonies that its not the type of equipment you have, its the creativity and talent you have.

have some one made a battery pack for a sigma super dg flash?
that will save me a lot of $$$ in batteries
Yes. Not me, but there was just a post a while back on one made with a 6 volt battery and some doll rods to go in where the battery was. Maybe I or someone else can find the link and post it here.

Nice site. When do you think you'll have the details up about the Home Depot Bees?
The problem with the home depot bees is that I have been wroking hard on making a CHEAP "COOL BEE." Unfortunately, the more designs I make, I can't seem to make one worth while under $250. Now that is total, whereas the Wescott TD5 Spiderlite is $400 just for the light without the bulbs, stand, and softbox--- but I don't have $250 right now to make a homemade kit.
I built it in Home Depot and the workers there freaked out when they saw me assemble it...but I couldn't buy it and look my wife in the face. (We are sort of broke fixing the roof.).
The regualar HOME BEES are easy and cheap. But I am waiting on my color corrected umbrella to put it all together and take some pics with it.

Hehe...then LOOK AWAY! =) Any way you can explain the assembly without having all the parts? Whats needed?
I, too, love your site. Its going to be fantastic when you start adding more and more info.
I'll tell you what I will do. I will get all the part and shoot them AT Home Depot and then can show you all. It took weeks of pulling and planing the cool bee design is a really proud moment for me.
