p.1 #1 · Comparing Film Body EOS 3 vs 7NE

I've been shooting fully digitally for the last two years and I'm just finding I miss my wide ends too much and the out of the box saturation and pop of Velvia. I'm not willing to completely switch back to film, more I just want to get a good 35mm body to use in addition.

So I'm trying to decide between the EOS3 and the 7NE and my main desires are as follows:

Fast AF, better AF than the 10D in lowlight.
Min 3fps
E-TTL II prefered
AV, TV and Full M modes
Ability to bracket 0,-,+
Ability to change bracket between 1/2 - 1/3 stops prefered
Ideally the CF ability to change the focus lock to the * button like on my 10D.
Mirror Lockup

For what I'm looking for, what can the 7NE not do that the EOS3 can, and/or what other feathers does the EOS3 have that would make me consider spending the extra $450+?

Thanks!

p.1 #2 · Comparing Film Body EOS 3 vs 7NE

Before I went digital I had the 7NE and chose it over the EOS 3. For me there wasn't much of a difference at the time. From what I can think of now the EOS 3 is superior because of the spot metering, 1/3 increment exposure compensation, better build, weather resistance, and a higher maximum shutter speed.

If those things don't matter for you I would say go with the 7NE. It is a great body for the price and I found the AF to be very fast.

For me the most important thing that the EOS 3 gives you that the 7NE doesn't is the 1/3 stop increment for exposure compensation or, any aperture/shutter setting for that matter.

This may not be very important for you though.

EDIT: Also I would say, with the saved money from the 7NE I would suggest saving up for a nice wide angle lens.

Jukas, not directly answering your question, but there are a couple of Eos-3 cameras going for less than $500 in the B&S forum.

p.1 #4 · Comparing Film Body EOS 3 vs 7NE

Funny thing, I just bought an EOS 3 and sold my Elan 7NE. The EOS 3 will autofocus with the center sensor with lenses as slow as f/8. The center sensor will function as a cross-type with lenses as slow as f/4. 4.3fps for the EOS 3 vs 4 for the Elan. The PB-E2 will give you 6fps with alkalines and 7 with Canon's Ni-MH battery pack. The EOS 3 features light weather sealling where the Elan does not. My biggest selling point for te 3 was the 45 point eye-focus. The EOS 3 does 1/2 and 1/3 brackets, the Elan only allows 1/2 stops. One thing the 3 lacks is the ETTL II. Mirror lockup is a given for both as is Av Tv and full M. The 3 will focus better in low light than the Elan anyday. I just picked up a mint EOS 3 with the PB-E2 on the B&S forum for $525. You may consider getting a used EOS 3.

A couple of other factors to consider is:

1. The 7E viewfinder only shows about 90% of the actual area. This might be a problem when doing critical compositions for say landscape photos. The EOS-3 is better ( at about 97% ), but still not the 100% I would really like.

2. Spot metering on the EOS-3 is very handy. You can take multiple metering readings ( highlight and shadow ) and have the camera average out the reading if you choose.

I got myself a 1n for similar reasons. I didn't care about E-TTL-II because I've found results from plain TTL and autoflash just as good (never liked plain-ol E-TTL tho). I bought the body for only $270 from keh.com and it was in pretty darn good condition for their "bargain" bin. I wanted the 1-series or 3 because of the large viewfinder which'll let me manual focus when I want to.

Hmm, let's see. The 3 is superior to the 7ne by leaps and bounds. The 3 is very similar to a 1D in handling. It has all of the same features except 100% viewfinder and PFs. But the low light focusing, interchangeable screens, spot metering, 45-point AF, etc., etc., should talk you into a 3.

Now that being said, as zero2k mentions, there are some great deals to be had for a 1n.

Both the 3 and the 1n are polycarbonate, which turns some folks off. The 7ne isn't, or really is but has some metal top and front plates. The IIe is also the same way, but has better low light focusing abilities than the 7ne.

I could go on.

But NK Guy did it for me already:

It depends, The EOS 3 has more features than a EOS 7 but then again the EOS 7 is much cheaper and much smaller. The EOS 3 is a pro model the EOS 7 is a prosumer model.....

the EOS 3 also has weather sealing and intechangable focusing screens, spot meter and 45 point autofocus compared to the EOS 7 which only has 7 points.

They are both good cameras so it is a tough decission, I have a EOS 7e and enjoy using it but I am thinking of upgrading to a EOS 3 at the end of the year (or possibly a EOS 1V HS) How often will you shoot film?

If you plan only to shoot the occasional Roll then go the EOS 7 If you plan to do some serious shooting then go the EOS 3.

The biggest advantage of the EOS 3 over the 7NE is the viewfinder. The EOS 3 has the biggest, brightest and most vivid viewfinder I have used. The 7N/7NE is small 'n dim in comparison. The 2nd big diff is constructon quality: the 3 is beefy and weather sealed whereas the 7 is lightweight and unsealed. If you need a spotmeter, only the 3 will do. Finally, the 7 feels like a toy and the 3 feels like a professional tool, solid and balances better with big glass.

Unfortunatelly, I just read the 2000 issue of Pop. Photo and they rated the viewfinder at 93% of actual area. It's still better by all means though.

Be careful. A 97% VF can also be a 93% VF. How? Some divide by the longer dimension. Some divide by the diagonal. Some divide by the area. Confusing? You bet, and on purpose to get you to buy cameras.

I had an Elan 7E and now have an EOS 3 it really like the 3. It is so solid and the viewfinder is amazing. 45point AF is great. Spot metering is great.
Elan 7E POS plastic back latch broke once on me and wasted a really good roll.
