10d and it was a piece of crap . Second was the 1ds and it was a good camera but was sold to ge medium format digital . Got a lot of great images from commercial shoots with it . Now I have a 1d markII coming on monday and am on the list for a 1ds markII to be here in a month or so .
I've used a Minolta SRT101, Canon F1 and A1 for decades. I purchased a used Olympus digital P&S a couple of years ago. Ok for snaps but the quality I enjoyed with film simply wasn't there.
I watched developments in the DSLR market for the last few years and decided it was time to jump in when I saw the 20D announced back in August '04. It took me 3 months to get around to buying the 17-85 kit and a few more months to get a few more lenses to go with it.
Ahhh the venerable D30 of course. When I first picked it up I thought I'd "crossed over" to the promised land. I had it for over a year and a half. Then the day I took delivery of the 1D once again I thought I'd stepped out of a Toyota Camry into a Mercedes 600SEC. Turbo. Hog heaven indeed. From there I had to sell it nearly 2 years later in order to get up money for closing costs on a new home. I was broken. Got a 10D to tide me over but felt crushed by comparison and was lost. Then I was saved once more the very week the 20D was release. Once again I felt I was in business.........

I just picked up a 1D MarkII for $3999 from The Photovilliage .
I avoided the upgrade path and simply waited it out until the technology reached the level I required. Once the quality equalled 35mm (and in fact, it soundly surpassed it), I jumped on board within four months of its release. It's going to be a long, long time before I truly need to replace it.

and the winning camera was? I'm sure most know what you shoot with, but for the rest of us? Mike Reichman said the D30 equalled film, but others may argue the 1Ds was the first. And to some it never will be

Whoops, my mistake. I still remember the original release price. I've been looking at B+H, they have it for $4000, but by the time I add a second battery, 4GB Microdrive, card reader (I just connect my D30 to my computer now), and a MACK warranty, its essentially $4500 again.

True enough.
1Ds for me. I'm certain it will ultimately be remembered as "The Turning Point"...
I broke my digital cherry with a couple DCS-520s on loan from CPS while attending a digital photojournalism seminar for a week back in 1996. Those puppies never left my side for the whole week. (I think each body was valued at something like $15,000 at the time!!) You should have seen what they did to molten glass, fire, coals, and electric filaments colorwise!!!!!
Bought my own D30 as my first personal dslr 2001.
My first Canon DSLR was the D60 almost 3 years ago now. I bought a used D30 the next year to replace my E10 (my backup body for commercial work). Bought a 10D last May and will sit with these 3 for another generation. For my commercial work the D60 is sufficient--and the 10D is terrific (and even the D30 was good since I only have to print those to 8 x 10), but for my personal work, I do a lot of available light and want both high ISO with low noise and a bit more resolution--10-11MP will be sufficient for my needs. I started with some Kodak digicam a number of years ago--moved to Canon G1, then to Oly E10--and then back to a Canon. I shot film with Canon (and others)--and kept an AE1.
