I believe that the IS system is great for low light photography but i think non IS lenses are sharper when used properly. Also check out this website: http://www.astropix.com/HTML/M_DAP/M11/M11.HTM

Unfortunately, "used properly" (without IS) in low-light conditions MAY mean that you're shooting static subjects with a tripod that's locked in place, with mirror lock-up.

The bottom line is really this: IF you can use the lens without IS and get exceptional results, then there's no reason at all to turn IS on. In fact, you should probably turn it off.

Unfortunately, for the vast majority of people, this just isn't the case.

As far as that astrophotography link, I'm not so sure that it really shows that the non-IS lenses would be better in that application. Some of the issues are really sensor issues, IMO. I will say, though, that for astrophotography, you SHOULD be able to mount the lens in such a way that IS becomes unnecessary.

yes just get any lens for the new $8000 camera as long as it's good. forget focal length or photographic needs. useless trivial aspects.

sounds like you easily have the experience and knowledge to warrant an $8000 body

It seems that a few are not too happy to see my signature with lens that I have tested. I took my signature down and in hope that no one else will bring it up in the middle of the thread and disrupt the main topic. I thought perhaps we can express ourselves more freely and it is our character that differentiate ourselves and overall as a community we can share differences in our approach to contribute to the forum but I feel that it is not well accepted here.

In the end it is only lens and a spectrum of them just like all of you. I am glad to see Canon, Nikkor, Pentax, Sigma, Tamron, Zeiss, Leica and more just like I am glad to see all of you in different ways and whether you are new are veteran here. I wish this forum continue to strive and you all have great mentors and creative people here. I know this forum will continue to thrive.

Best,
-Son

I found Son's signature very interesting but of no value to me as I do not have a full frame camera that requires that kind of lens. Nevertheless, it does not irritate me but I can see why it might irritate others as it appears to be gear gloating...etc. The internet is like that, you can type whatever you want and add whatever emoticon you wish, but people will mis-interprete the messange.... you got to find your own balance...

If i was Son, i would create a page with all the photos of these great lens and perhaps a review and have a link to them in my signature. Problem solved as no one will say your signature is too long...etc and the people who are genuinely interested in his vast experience will go to the page..

If you need a place to host the page... i am more than willing to help

:-)

I think this discussion has seriously veered off-topic. The latest discussion isn't doing anyone any good, so lets just quit and let the thread slide south.

Are you a collector or a photographer? For a collector, the gear's the thing, so it is given prominence, one lens per line. For a photographer, the photo's the thing, so the gear is de-emphasized and put into a single line. Many photographers do that here, and to claim that there is some technical difficulty preventing that is unbelievable, especially when you don't ask for help solving such a technical difficulty preventing you from putting them in a single line or a very few lines.

For example, Guy Mancuso has a nice set of lenses, including some Zeiss, which he summarizes on one line so that his equipment list doesn't overwhelm what he has to say. He uses his equpment and many people have been stimulated to ask him about it because he does list it. Alternatively, a photographer might write something like "varied set of Zeiss and Contax lenses" or similar, depending on the lenses. That would be sharing, and alerting users interested in that gear, without the gear being the thing.

If I'm not mistaken, this is a photographer's forum, not a collector's forum. So, as has been suggested in the past, do as many others do here and list the gear on one line or summarize it.

There is a happy medium. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

It seems kind of petty to jump into someone's case about the way they list their gear.

Exactly, I don't get why its such an issue. Most other forums are littered with signatures that are nothing more than obnoxiously huge pictures. I saw nothing wrong with a list of lenses.

Son, the complaints on your signature wasn't the content. Well, at least from me. It was how much real estate you were taking up with the whole thing. Complete waste of horizontal space. I was suggesting that you just reformat it and compress it somehow.

This is directed at the original poster:

You sound like someone who cares WAY too much about the ABSOLUTE quality of his lenses. People like this are usually the worst photographers, and are not able to make a good image with whatever gear they are given. Even with the so called "soft Canon glass", the 1Ds2 will yield better images than ANYTHING from Leica.

Andy Biggs,

I just like to clarify that I have asked FM members here to help to make the signature on a single lines but I received no help. I also see other FM members asked for help because they could not get the line to go across. I would like if anyone could help me so that I could post the information to help other members who have the same problem.

All FM members,
I also would like to explain so that we don't have a misunderstanding. I do not want to show my gear because those that know me well know my passion. The reason I highlight certain thing is to organize my information so that everyone can understand more easily. I am detail oriented and I learn by structure and pattern. There are all kind of people on this forum young, old, language barrier, and more and I thought by organize my information people could follow. I like to teach those that are not capable as most of you. For example, I would highlight the lens brand and under that I would highlight the wide angle name such as Distagon and F-Distagon. For most of us Zeiss fan would know immediately what Distagon mean but for others they don't know. Also such as Leica call their lens by the f stop such as Summicron represents f/2 and Summilux represent f/1.4 and so on. Zeiss and Leica call Vario- as their zoom lens. Leica system even help their fan more by call Vario-Elmarit for Zoom and F stop 2.8 lens.

FretNoMore,
I think calling me a show off is too much before you understand the reason what I do.

I also don't believe that the struggle or issue is always bad. I hope that I will be able to be here to continue to post information to FM forum. As up to date I have over 700 posts and soon to be 1000 post-member. I hope that if I can learn how to post across the line so I can help others like myself.

Monito,
You wrote, "It doesn't have to be all or nothing".
I would like you to tell us here where is the line where we should stop. Is there a fine line where we could draw here?

I hope my exlanation here will clarify the situation.

Some sites have a recommendation that you keep your signature to two or three lines, to keep the pages reasonably short and easy to read. You can always link to your home page or refer to your profile information as well.

Some also don't allow model numbers and brand names in the signature as it makes searching for threads on a particular piece of gear impossible (you get hits on all signatures as well). I'm not sure about that one as it could be helpful to find people that use a specific camera or lens as well, to send a PM or email.

Son,

again, sigs with equipment isn't a bad thing. Just organize it so it doesn't take half of a web page, and just creates more wasted space. When you contribute multiple times on the same screen, the page becomes incredibly difficult to navigate and sort out redundant information from new content. Thanks for the explanation. No need from my end, but I think there are others here that are a little more animated in their responses.

, I almost stopped reading this thread after I read the idiotic line in the first post about the 500/4 and 600/4 being unsharp. Glad I didn't stop there.

When will Canon wake up and make better glass in the wide angle range? (uh, not zooms please).

Why so many responses to an obvious troll post? Leave the Leica Men where they have been since the M4 ... If Leica Man is convinced Canon glass is soft he is entitled to stay behind with his Leica glass. I do hope for him Leica will survive it's financial crisis and build a future again with up to date interesting photographic instruments. In the meantime: I like shooting with those 500 and 600 lenses. Canon rocks, let's have more EOSfun!

putting your sig onto one line is actually very simple. Just don't hit the return key! You can instead hit " ; " to break up the items in the list. If when you test it out later something doesn't seem right, put a return before the messed up part. hope this helps!

Amazing how this thread was hijacked and used to bully someone into changing the nature of his signature. From all of his posts, Son has been extremely respectful, passionate, enthusiastic, helpful and polite...in this instance, I'm not certain he has received the same in return.

Hopefully I haven't offended anyone with this post or the length of my signature line...Or my use of bullets in sentences; Or my lack of experience as an fm member; Or my limited number of posts; Or my perceived lack of photographic skill; Or my unwillingness to use flash, tripod or automatic focus when appropriate; Or my dog Nancy.
