I cant wait for this summer man, we will have to do some serious shooting from boat, kayak, and land. It will be a spectacular time. I plan on picking up the 200-400 VR sometime this month, so I am just stoked. Start building up those paddling muscles

Excellent , again bro , you are such a talent , I hope I can keep up

Exciting times !! Great images Charles.!! You have some wonderful additions to the portfolio. Makes me wish the owls were still thick around Ottawa. The majority have moved on. Make the best of it.

Charles,
Great shots. It must have been a great experience. You shouldn't admit,
though, that it was close enough to shoot with 200mm or less or you won't be able to rationalize spending big money on long glass.
Les

Les, I hear ya...but I am just trying to convince myself I was lucky and the bigger glass is needed Thanks for the comments!

Thanks Peter, your work has been an inspiration to force myself to keep driving up north. I'm sorry to hear most have moved on...

#1 is very nice. Look at the eyes. Amazing creature isn't it ? Thanks for sharing.

Definitely an amazing creature. It's funny, when these guys are standing next to you and staring back at you, they seem like less of a bird and more of a two-legged animal...maybe it's just me

I don't understand the fascination...ugly, nasty little creatures... Nah, just kidding. Look at those bright, pretty eyes - almost hypnotizing. Excellent shots of a very exciting encounter.

Wow, what a great day you had. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Rob, it was one of the best days I have ever had with my camera in hand. Truly a motivating experience...

Now I just need to get an eagle to land on my shoulder when I am in the kayak photographing the loons That might top it...

Fantastic experience - but it sounds to me like this owl has been fed by humans. Approaching humans is highly abnormal, and it is typically begging behavior. Hopefully this little guy won't pay for it with his life - mean kids, people with pets, cars, all kinds of risks.

But you did the right thing - you took some great shots and you enjoyed the opportunity to experience an owl so closely!

Braingiant, all I have to say is W O W . One thing to experience another thing is to take advantage of the opportunity, and you did it in spades! I like the composition, nailed exposure, color and great story to boot. Very envious and happy you got such an opportunity. Got to print that one and stick it on the wall!

Great job!

Charles,

If I was to make the 17-19 hour drive from WV to MN to photograph the Great Grays where exactly would that be? It would probably be a quick trip of just about 4 days ( 2 for driving and 2 for shooting).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

What an experience. Sometimes things like this just happen for no apparent reason. At least you were prepared for the occaision and came back with some wonderful images.

I, on the other hand, never seem to have my gear close. This morning while feeding cows I had three bald eagles in my calving pen dining on afterbirth. All were in close proximity, but I also had four dogs with me and no camera. Tommorrow morning I will see what will I can do. They will frequent the same area as long as the cows don't chase them away.

Thanks for sharing your great grey experience.

I agree, I think he was looking at me and asking "So where is the little aquarium store mouse you are going to throw?"
