Am I the only one who did not know this lens existed?
I have the Summicron 40 f2 - which is tiny and excellent.
I guess you are paying for the rarity of the Elmarit 40 f2.8 because the Cron is only about $500-$700.

From what I can remember, it was pulled by Leica and replaced with the summicron 40mm, as the image quality was subpar. So yes, rare.

Saw it as well and looked it up in red book unpopular when there was 40/2 not much bigger for Leica CL so it is a lesser lens than summicron 40 marginally smaller - but now because it was not popular - total production was only 400 copies so it is quite rare , rarer for instance than the new 66mm for instance. A lens for collectors (says faint haze- but rare lens) or someone really curious but if you want a 40 to shoot there are lots of decent 40/2 CL lenses out there, a really good copy is more than 500, but maybe 1K will do it I have seen several offered for sale in recent months, if you want a 40/2 you can get the Minolta version (same optics) slightly different from filter and later ones of Minolta have better coating, they are cheaper than lenses stamped Leica.

The James Lager book says the Elmarit-C was never released although he does show a pic. There were 400 serial numbers assigned. Looks like a lens that should interest the collectors only.

quote is that it is a "terrible" lens not really released so employees and such ave copies so most of these are likely in better condition, I have noted that lately there is a fair amount estate stuff surfacing from Leica employees who worked at Leica in 70s or so... there has been rare stuff, this is sorta rare... probably enough will surface to keep lens collectors happy, and likely not a lens Fred is anxious to review.

a failed experiment or product is the way I'd sum it
