One of my favorite places to run away to is the San Rafael Swell in Utah. I didn't know how affected it would be from the recent heavy rains, so I first went to was the northern part and up on the rim. Someone told me that hiking in one of the canyons, he encountered deep, sloppy mud & turned around after a mile. I was fortunate & picked a canyon that was dry except for a handful of good-sized puddles. Then I went south to Hanksville and west to the badlands, hoping that the bentonite would be dry at least roadside. The rains had revived the grasses and left lots of water next to the roads. Happily, I was able to stay out of the mud.
At the risk of giving away my geographic ignorance, I must say I opened this thread expecting to see pictures of giant waves crashing on the coast in San Rafael. Therefore I was completely surprised to see these photos . Beautiful expansive pictures. The first one is quite dramatic emphasized by the inclusion of the sunstar.

The first is a lovely photo yet not saying autumn to me. Now the second is super and it's defiantly autumn in it.

If you look really carefully, there is a a stand of yellow cottonwoods.........but the Swell doesn't have a lot of foliage. More petroglyphs & pictographs and canyons.
