I've been needing a new camera bag for a bit now. I have a Sony 200-600, so I need something that can comfortably fit that 28-70, 70-200, two camera bodies with battery grips, plus accessories and a laptop. I was thinking of going with the Thinktank Photo Darklight backpack (20L). Does anyone have a good experience with any other backpacks or any advice on how to pick one out?
That's a good kit. You might be better with the next size up as you will surely want to pack in some batteries, filters, a packable raincoat. and some snacks.
The 20L Darklight will just hold that kit BUT it's just a tad thin and with VG's on the bodies, one body would probably need to be naked, no lens attached; and everything else pretty tight. I think the 25L is going to be a better choice, leaving a bit of wiggle room.
An additional consideration is air travel. The size and weight restrictions on what one can take as a personal item or carry-on can vary depending on where you may want to travel with your gear (if flying is in your plans).
You might want to look at some panel loading backpacks and travel packs. That could mean adapting inserts to fit. I have an REI Ruckpack (if I remember the name correctly) that easily handles the 200-600. I have the tall size but with the internal frame, might be a bit large for some carry-on limits.
I personally would go to a store and load up your gear and try it out to see how comfortable the loaded pack is on you. If you just want the pack for transport, that’s a different story, but if you are going to carry that load for any length of time, I’d want to try putting the loaded pack on for a bit. Specs don’t tell you how the pack fits your body.
I also think that 20L is rather tight for working out of, especially with the 5" depth. It might be OK for transport only. I prefer bags with 6" depth.
I use a 26L backpack for the Sony 200-600, Canon 100-500, 24-105/4, 1.4x, two cameras, 5 batteries, memory cards, 3 glasses, LensCoats, small power supply, and other stuff.
This is the backpack that I am using - I don't mean this as an endorsement, but I haven't had problems when flying with this backpack as a "personal item" (not a carry-on), e.g., on a recent AirCanada flight to Grenada.
The question is what is the main purpose? There are backpacks for hiking, also some that allow easy access to the gear. In my use, the backpack is mostly for transporting the gear when flying, or travelling by train outside of Canada. One of my considerations was the weight of the backpack itself, that I wanted to be as light as possible.

This! I'm long waisted and like a taller fit pack if dealing with more than a little weight. Trying it on loaded is really helpful. And gets you a look at materials and quality.
