p.1 #1 · Considering adding the VG-C6, yeah or nay?
With IBIS and OSS so darn good nowadays, I shoot a lot more hand-held and hardly use the tripod. I also shoot vertical frequently, but at the same time historically have never bothered much changing my grip specifically for it either. Hence I'm in a bit of a quandary considering adding the grip base, and would appreciate comments from those who have used it. TIA.

Traditionally, one of the reasons for buying a vertical grip has been extended battery life. But it seems like Sony’s new battery performs really well
So, unless you’re shooting extended periods in portrait orientation. Or you want the extra weight to balance out your telephoto setup. I don’t think it’s a must have. More of a nice to have
Personally, I have bought the VG for last three body generations. But I find I rarely used it. And sold them in near pristine condition when I upgraded bodies
Some guys are vertical grip people. I’ve found that I’m not really one of them

I use the grip primarily when I'm shooting the 400-800mm (especially on a monopod or gimbal; much more natural hand position when the lens is rotated in its collar.)

I added the VG-C6 and never took it off again, it made the feel in hand much better for my preferences. And I loved dual batteries on board - I only had to charge once every 1-2 weeks. The fit is nice and tight on the A7R6. But personally I do think it is overpriced for what it is, as most manufacturer vertical grips are (to me).

It's pretty great. Feels more premium than the VG-C4 for sure and fits way better on my 7R6 than the VG-C4 did on my 7R5. I have not compared it to a VG-C5. I wouldn't ever pay the new price, that's just cray cray. Unless money isn't concern, hold out for a used one.

The grip adds too much useless weight for me, especially if hand holding is needed. My hand actually still works fine vertically, which I understand varies based on anatomy. I'd be more inclined to use the grip for video or long, heavy use on a tripod or other situation where the doubled battery makes sense.
Then it also needs a different, slightly heavier L bracket. What are people using for the gripped a7rVI brackets?

Improved ergonomics can reduce fatigue if you're frequently in portrait orientation. But the added size and weight of the grip increases fatigue when hand holding. So it is the a double edged sword.
I only use a grip along when on a monopod. Hand holding a smaller, lighter camera feels better.
