I just purchased one of these flashes on buy and sell in my research indicated that as long as the R8 had the most current firmware this flash will work properly with this camera. Could any of you R8 owners verify that this is correct information?

In case you don't know, the latest flash FW supposedly alleviates some of the connectivity issues with the wireless flash communication. There was also a service advisory for some serial #s of the EL-5 for rapid battery drain. Some people feel that the LP-EL still drains rather quickly even with service and updated flash FW. I decided not to send mine in, since I travel with the battery in the carry-on and the flash(es) go in the checked luggage anyway.
I assume you have an LC-E6 charger for the LP-EL or maybe it was sold used with one. The LC-E6 is the standard charger for the LP-E6 series battery used in most midsized Canon camera bodies since about 2009, so it is convenient not to need another charger. However, if you have only the R8 or similar camera with the mini batteries, then you may need to get a separate charger. The EL-5 is not provided with a charger in the box.

That's a good point about the EL-5 not including the charger. Also worth noting that you cannot use various third party LP-E6 chargers in which the battery is inserted 'standing' vertically into the charger's charge port, rather than horizontally via the lock tabs as the LC-E6 does. The LP-EL battery is physically thicker and wider (and also longer) than the LP-E6 and simply won't fit the vertical-style chargers that have their ports shaped specifically to tightly hold the end of the LP-E6.
Canon should have adopted in-battery USB-C charging with the LP-E6P and LP-EL batteries (though that one dates back to the now relatively old EL-1 speedlite).
