Being honest I find room for important improvements.
I would like:
IBIS- This would have the effect in many situations of improving dynamic range because at the aperture and shutter speed you could shoot up to 5 stops lower ISO. 5 stops lower ISO is a huge improvement in image quality. Effectively giving us a much better sensor.
Faster sensor scan speed - Meaning we could have a fully useful silent shutter. Important in many circumstances when we want to shoot discretely. It would also mean that even when metering off the sensor we would get an instant shutter response. Very advantageous at imes.
A faster scanning sensor combined with IBIS would finally allow for a smooth and accurate EVF (Visoflex) experience when shooting with an EVF.
Faster boot and wake from sleep times - Currently we must always keep the camera on and not in sleep mode in very dynamic shooting situations. Getting almost instant start times would be equivalent to getting a much bigger battery.
A fully functional flash system compatible with third party (Godox?) TTL/HSS systems- Currently I have to switch to my SL system to get these features.
I'm sure many here will have more helpful ideas.
Yes there is a lot of room for improvements in Leica M cameras.
In speaking with Leica staff they assure me that Leica is aware of these very needs. Some of them are the very reasons that Leica has decided to develop a proprietary sensor and processor. Going faster while preserving image quality allows for the removal of the mechanical shutter leaving room in the existing form factor for IBIS and other features, while improving reliability and less maintenance. It is coming...
Indeed. I still like use the M but 60 Mpix without IBIS and rangefinder calibration is starting to get old.
I'm using a Sony A7RV and the 9mpix, 0.9 viewfinder is much better to focus manually than anything by Leica, IBIS is very convenient and allows focusing by zooming, etc.
A modern M should offer IBIS, an hybrid viewfinder, a redesigned body with a handgrip, etc.
Or at least something like the EV-1 but with today technology, not the one from 20 years ago.
If people want something "pure", that's ok. Leica can offer it and I understand the appeal.
But right now, we are going very far in nostalgic/tradition territory.
Another thing: the price of the lenses is a joke when one see the quality Japanese and Chinese are selling for 4 to 10 times less.
Eventually. Maybe first in the EV-2? Would make sense here as it's an EVF-driven experience that would benefit most from everything mentioned. A faster sensor and new, fast, processor would also hopefully unlock PD-assist manual focusing like we were all hoping would be featured in the EV-1.
