p.1 #1 · Travel casual tele, 70350G or 100400 5.6-8?

Camera: original A1
It seems those two lenses are pretty similar in size/weight.

The 70-350G gets me the same 30fps, XD linear motor (vs. non XD in non G)
70-300G seems to get full frame coverage before 200mm and makes no difference for A1's 5.8k 4K60p (APSC)

Focal Length 70–350 mm vs. 100–400 mm
Max Aperture f/4.5–6.3 vs. f/5.6–8
Weight 625g vs. 654g
Length 142mm vs. 164.5mm
Filter Thread 67mm vs. 67 mm
Teleconverter No vs. Yes
Macro/Mag 0.23x vs. 0.41
Price used about the same

I know the image circle is bigger on the non G and will have higher resolution, but I'm curious how they would compare in other aspects

I got the 70-350 when I was just using aps-c and anticipating an A7Riv and the 70-300s and 100-400s if the time didn't seem to fit my interests as well. Now? Using more ff and more choices. I'd maybe consider if shooting more at the wider end than long? I'd be weighing the Tamron 50-300 in this, too. But don't have a studied answer because full coverage at 50mm is in play.

Used sigma 100-400mm can be had at affordable prices. (if you don't need the 30 FPS)

I don't know about 100-400. I've used 70-350 in the past on A1 Mark 1. I loved that lens despite the fact that it's a DX lens. I was considering travelling with a DX camera

I own the 70-350 and the new 100-400. I've not closely compared the results for these lenses but overall feel they are very similar. Maybe the 100-400 has the edge when cropping. I do know that neither lens is as good as the 70-200 GM2 f2.8 + 2x TE , all when used @ 400mm f8.

To me the post and title - Travel casual tele - do not go very well together. Just based on title my answer would be Viltrox 85 Evo

The sensible answer is to get the FE lens for full frame camera. Within 600-700g max weight there are also many other options if you are ready sacrifice some reach. And if reach is what you want, say for birding. then latest version RX10 might be the answer.
