Monika, a superb set that feels like scifi and fires up my imagination! I like every one of them but # 2 has a special feel for me. I hope you print and hang your favorite. A definite vote!

Yes it's an incredible sight Monica. The wind was blowing from the sea to the land and we were just above the drop off. I had to close the window as it was too hot. I did not realize what happened till I was back at the hotel and saw my self in the mirror.
Helicopters are not allowed this close anymore as one went down in one of the vents a few years later and it was a very difficult rescue.

Morris,
Did your eyebrows grow back? I've heard that if they're shaved, they don't always grow back.
We had gasmasks, though only on land. It sounds like you were close enough that it would have been a good idea. There have been a number of deaths of hikers (some tourists and at least 1 guide )who succumbed.

What a fantastic series. Not sure what to add to what everyone else said...just that I'm both very envious and very impressed!
Thanks, everyone! I have a shot (that I have to find) of that little ohia in flames. While I have #2 on the wall, I think that series of the last moments of the ohia's life may be my favorite.
One thing that was kind of amusing that I just remembered is that everyone was made hungry, not by the hiking (which was substantial), but the smell of the burning wood that made us think of barbeque!
I hope all of you have a chance to see & photograph lava. I was too late for the string of 60' high lava fountains, but only residents & photojournalists were allowed in then.
