I did hear back from rrs.
They said there had not been many changes to the head over the years, and had no real explanation for my experience.
They did mention the ball head can become smoother as it breaks in. Again, my prior one was 20+ yrs old. That could possibly explain my findings, but I don’t want a clunky ball head until break in is completed.
I’m beginning to suspect I just got a bad copy. I hope that is the case.
I still own and use a bunch of rrs gear. I have always felt it was the pinnacle of my gear. I’m just disappointed with this one new piece.

I have already returned the head th B$H.
I’m going to try a couple heads, but need one for a trip in 2 weeks. I’ll see what the Arcatech and lh-55 feel like. If I still have issues I may try rrs again. We will see
