So has anyone reached any definitive conclusions yet? Has the lower weight changed how you shoot, do you wish you would've went with the 400 with TCs?
I have concluded, the lens is a joy to shoot with. I've mentioned this several times, but I forget the lens if this makes sense, I just shoot. With my other lenses, there comes a point where the lens draws attention to itself, size and weight. My copy of the 600 is very sharp, AF is plenty fast, OSS works well.
I'm selling my 200-600, 100-400, and the 300 F/2.8. The 300 was purchased Sept 1st, if anyone wants a good deal, reach out.
I'll buy the new 400/4.5 and press on with a very light kit to shoot with. I'll keep my 400-800 as it handles TCs very well, even if it's a tank compared to the new lenses.
I'm a fan to say the least, I think Sony hit a homerun with this design.

** edit** No, I do not wish I would have gone with the 400/4.5 first. I live at the 600+ range and the 600 was the logical first step for me. It also handles the TCs very well.

What I shoot remains the same just able to do it longer without tiring out.
I have both 600 & 400. They're both very close in IQ that in practical usage it is negligible. A 400 + TC would be 15-20% heavier than a 600 bare. On paper it doesn't seem like much but it is very noticeable; at least for me.
If you always shoot 600mm range then a 600 F6.3 is better.
If you shoot mostly 400mm and sometimes need further reach then 400 F4.5+TC is the way to go.

That is a nice plan.
If I owned no Sony lenses I'd probably just buy a 400/4.5 and 600/6.3 and be done with it
I got to shoot my 600/6.3 for the first time today and it was a joy to use due to the size and weight. I can always track BIF better with lighter gear. My 300GM/2xTC is much easier to track than the 600/4 and this lens takes it to another level.
The more centred and steady one can keep the BIF in the frame the more often the BEAF actually grabs the eye. Unless you own an A7RVI and then it will grab the eye no matter how erratic you are

Very curious. PM me price for that 300.

My 600mm f/6.3 arrived yesterday around 4:00 p.m. With little daylight left and nowhere else to go, I paired it with my A1 II and headed into the backyard for a few test shots.
The light was poor, and I had no opportunities to photograph birds in flight, though I hope to try today or tomorrow. Even so, I was pleased with the few stationary shots I captured. The lens was comfortable to handhold and caused no strain.
Once I have photographed birds in flight under a range of lighting conditions, I’ll be able to compare the lens with my 300mm paired with a 2X teleconverter. For now, I’m impressed. ...Show more →
Beautiful shots. Did you apply any noise reduction?

Thanks. I'm going to pick up a 70-200 F/4 macro as well for landscapes mainly, this will fill in for the 100-400. It's light and small as well.
Looking forward to seeing your shots, it still blows me away how small and light the lens is, it's a blast to shoot with.

A few shots from this morning. Included the 1200mm vs 600mm similar Pintail shots taken just moments apart.
I've been eagerly awaiting hearing about your experience with the new 600 6.3 GM. Lol
How do you feel the AF speed and AF accuracy of your 600 6.3 @ 600mm and 840mm compares to your:
100-400 f4.5 @ 560mm
300 f2.8 @ 600
600 f4 @ 600 and 840mm?
How do you think your 300GM will continue to fit in?
