Timing, perhaps but being able to dial in decent frame rates helps
And since you've done sports, I've concluded the best approach to baseball is a camera pit, tripod, pre-focus, and remote release. I constantly violate the rule about being in the field of play — but only a little bit.
Also my attention wanders as the game progresses and I chat with the coach. My goal is capturing each player in game-action shots, but sometimes full coverage isn't possible for a variety of reasons. C'est la vie.
