p.2 #1 · When is the new Sony A7C III coming out?

In my experience of shooting images as an enthusiastic and experienced amateur, the technical factors, given the presnt state of camera technology, that are most likel to ruin a picture are:

1. camera movement
2. missed focus
3. banding from LED lights
4. rolling shutter

I would therefore expect the next iteration of the A7Cxx cameras to have improved IBIS, improved AF, and a stacked or semi-stacked sensor, with possibly continued evolution in metering to improve the dynamic range that is actually captured. I would guesss they will also make some improvement to the EVF, but in regard to the EVF they are constrained by the need to keep the size of the camera body to a very compact form.

I've been a fan of A7C series and got the original one and A7CII at launch and the both have been my main cameras during their time until now. I'm also looking forward to III with expected features from A7V. Would be happy if they can improve the EVF from II while keeping the camera at very similar size & weight as II. I'd like a joystick as well. Not needing a different screen mechanism or full mechanical shutter personally.

I don’t even need a need sensor—but I think we’ll get one.

- I’d love a better EVF. Should get one.

- A joy stick. I doubt we’ll get one.

- Better MF aids (like a ZF with the eye box). Probably won’t get those.

So, I’ll not upgrade. Or do so down the line with a used price.

I’d love to be wrong. And it seems they might release the new 28/1.8 with an a7c3.

I'd probably wait if you're not in a hurry. The A7C II came out in 2023, so I'd guess the A7C III could show up sometime in 2026–2027, with 2027 feeling more likely. If your current A7C is still doing what you need, I'd hold off and see what Sony announces

I’ll probably wait until the next announcement of the Sony A7C III. The Mark I still delivers impressive results, even though it came out in 2020. I don’t shoot video, and for the kind of photography I do, I don’t need the best AF. My only complaint is the EVF.

I think Sony needs to rethink their pricing. Canon R8 ii is priced at $1900 that is a whooping $600 cheaper than A7c ii. Nikon Z5 iic is priced at $1400 that is a whooooooping $1100 cheaper than A6c ii. I know it lacks an evf which apparently needs to be bought separately. However, Nikon is selling Z5 ii with an evf at only $1700!!! Sony is going to lose a lot of sales to Canon and Nikon.

If they release together, hopefully that’s an indication the 28 1.8 will be tiny.

So you think Sony should be concerned about losing sales to Nikon…and not the other way around. Right now Nikon is scrapping for every sale they can get and lowering the cost gets them the revenue at the expense of margin.

Boss…we are losing $1 on every sale. Don’t worry son, we’ll make it up in volume.

The A7C series keeps being the smallest full-frame cameras with an EVF, IBIS, an articulating screen, etc. All that in such a compact body comes at a price.

Don't forget RAM crisis may delay launches quite a bit, so if they see no compelling reason to update yet, these release dates could easily slip 12 months.

Yes, in my opinion, the past trend may and can be reversed if Sony stops paying attention. On another note, it seems to me that Sony is already falling behind canon and the gap is widening.

Not sure what your argument should lead us to. The competing cameras have almost all the features you mentioned (except for the weight advantage) and at a much lower price. They also have some noteworthy advantages when it comes features (higher frame rate, better rear screen, less rolling shutter, raw video recording).

In any case, this matter will be settled by the mainstream consumer not by you and I. They will ultimately decide if the little saving on the weight is worth hundreds of dollars in extra cost. We are just speculating here. It happens that my speculation differs from yours.

The Z5IIc is unfortunately a much lower grade camera than the a7cII. It's really more like a Z30 with an older 24MP FF sensor and horrible rear LCD 720x480 (1M dot), then chopped the top. It is soundly criticized by enthusiasts.

I don't want cheaper, crappier Sony cameras. Sony does tend to keep around older models and price them lower or they can add some low-grade stuff, but also upgrade the "c" series including one with the 67MP sensor.

Not sure why you think the rear screen in A7c ii is any better than the one on Z5iic?! Again my argument wasn't about what I want or a few other forums members here want. Of course, enthusiast gear oriented crowd like you and I are not going to buy a low grade camera. I am not going to buy even the current version of A7c ii or A7cr. I want all the features of A7r v in an A7c body!

However to be honest with you, if I were on budget and I didn't care much about owning a top tier camera body, between A7c ii, Z5iic and EOS R8ii, the former would not be my choice. Maybe I am missing something, but the more I read about these cameras, the less I am seeing any significant advantage of A7cii over the competition that could justify the huge price gap. Yes, it does have one or two advantage here and there but it also falls short in one or two areas. For an average consumer on budget, it simply does not stand out against its competitors.

Like I wrote elsewhere, I understand Sony probably has to price their camera bodies above Canon and Nikon because they are losing some profit when they allow third party lens manufacturers to build AF lenses for the E mount system. Canon and Nikon may loose some profit by pricing their camera bodies lower but then, they compensate for it when most of their user base is forced to buy OEM brand lenses. However, the consumers buying these low grade camera bodies may not notice this advantage. After all, many of them may just buy the least expensive lens available.

Where Sony wins this battle is the lens availability department. SO MANY more options for E Mount than Z mount, and i won't even mention Canon. my go to lenses right now are the Viltrox 35FEII and the 55F1.8 eVO, and they are bringing in the dollars!

Hopefully not soon. I still feel that the a7c2 I got was recent. Newer version will make my camera feel old

For me, A7CII $2637. R8II $2488. If I buy a spare battery for each, the price difference diminishes.
So is that Sony AU / Sony US or Sony Inc? Rhetorical question, I don't think anyone posting on FM knows.

In Japan A7CII has been priced quite strategically and if you look at price comparison sites for best available street prices for new cameras, body-only (no lens kits) it's like this currently:

- A7CII: 214K yen
- R8II body only: 247.5K
- R6II body only: 267K
- R6III body only: 338K
- Nikon Z5II: 213.9K
- Nikon Z5IIC: 209.8K
- Nikon Zf: 259K
- Fujifilm X-E5: 237.6K

A7CII continues to sell better in Japan than any of the competitors in the list.

Yes, but at the cost of dynamic range, resolution (in the case of the A7CR), and, most importantly, at the cost of a very significant difference in size and weight. The A9III is a great camera for the right user, but it is not an [EDIT: A7Cxx].
