I'm going through another sprint in my negative files to convert images I want to preserve into digital format. The last couple of days I've been into the auto racing files. These go back to 1987 when I was shooting at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., for USA Today. I had something photographers at the time referred to as a "God Pass," because it gave me access to everywhere--pits, garages, track locations inside the barriers, and I mistakenly thought that included the driver's hospitality areas. I was walking around with several other photographers and saw Paul Newman talking to some film guys in his roped off area, so I walked in and took a few shots with my 300mm f2.8. When I went back to rejoin the other photographers they were all laughing and told me Newman HATED photographers and they were just waiting for him to grab me and throw me out. I guess he must have assumed I was with the film crew. Otherwise it would have been very embarrassing.
