High School Football time!

Went out and started shooting high school football again. Thinking about picking up the 400mm 4.5 to get a bit more distance than what the 70-200mm provides without breaking the bank on the 2.8 just yet. I can't afford it anyway lol

I would hold off on the 4.5 if you are shooting night games. My 400 f/2.8 at 1/1000 hits upwards of 16000 iso at some high schools here in NorCal. If the 400 is out of the question I would look at the 300 f/2.8 with an A1 you can punch in and still have some crop room left over. 4.5 would be unusable for editorial work at every high school here.

Lots of night games as of late! I wish I had seen this comment before I went out and picked up the 100-400. The 300mm is actually within reach, price-wise. I never thought the 400mm 2.8 would be creeping up to 16000 iso. Is that with LED lights at the high schools?

Damn, with that edit, totally fooled me. Denoise is crazy good now days. I need to get on our AD.... Some of the lighting arrays at our local HS are missing upwards of 8 bulbs lol.

The camera bodies do a great job as long as you don't underexpose the shot. 16000 ISO under exposed and brought up in post looks significantly worse than 25600 ISO properly exposed. This wasn't heavily de-noised. I can post the sooc if anyone wants to see it.

All shot with the 100-400mm 4.5. As long as I denoise the images, they came out just fine. I do wish I had bought the 300mm 2.8 tho. Lighting down here in So Cal isn't too bad. It looks like a lot of the high schools have upgraded their lighting around here.

Either way, those images came out looking great. When you do come across the harsher lighting, how do you compensate? Do you see any LED flickering, or is it just not as bright?

We have some really bad fields up here. Lot of hot spots and extremely dark end zones. I set custom wb at all the games I shoot as soon as the sun sets. Anti-flicker works really well on most lights, it's usually just really dark.
