I use AF-L/AE-L as AF-ON on the Zf, it's right at the top of the back side of the camera quite similar to the location of the AF-ON button on cameras that have one explicitly labeled as AF-ON. It's definitely a favorite camera body for me. I use the Smallrig grip that came with the camera to provide a deeper grip and Arca-Swiss quick release plate at the bottom as well.
The Zf having such a button, of course, doesn't help ZR users if they should want one as well. I just think of the ZR as not a hybrid or a stills camera but one designed specifically to be a small video camera with Z mount and RED color compatibility....Show more →
Thanks, for providing your perspective. Perhaps it is my atypical hand dimensions, long but not wide, and having mostly slender fingers, and short thumbs, but the ZR grip really works well, for me. Plus, the really large 4” LCD is lovely, for waist-level shooting, at which times I am sometimes using my thumb on the shutter button, anyway, making BBF impractical, anyway. The ZR’s LCD is useful, even under the mid-day August sun, in southern Texas. Obviously, waist-level shooting is very helpful for video shooting, but, I am loving it for still images.
The articulating screen seems to work well for some nature photography, too, because many wee beasties and close-range birds will flee, if two front-looking predatory eyes look directly at them. I could already do this, with my D850, but, the ZR has a MUCH larger, more-eye-friendly LCD, which is more-articulable.
As for grips, my favored add-on accessory grip is the lens barrel, of some of my favored lenses. The first Z lens I purchased was a the 26mm “pancake,” which certainly makes for a nicely compact rig, on the ZR, during the times that is important, but, I am loving the shapes of the lens barrels of my Nikkor 35/1.4G and 58/1.4G. Predictably, my much-loved AF-S 24-70/2.8G ED should deliver a good result, too.
I do not plan to ignore video. I recently took delivery of two 512GB Sandisk cards.
Again, thanks. I am new to Nikon Z, and while I was shooting video on Canon 7D DSLRs as early as 2010 or 2011, I am far from experienced with video, and only started liking video shooting, when we bought a pair of hers-and-then-his Z30 Nikon cameras, shortly before I added the ZR. (We had bought a Z6 for my wide, in 2018, at a local Nikon Z6/Z7 launch event, but she has seemingly never used her Z6 for video.)
