I bought the zr checking that the joystick button can be programmed thinking of changing it to af on for back button focus….
I can’t…. Or am I missing something.

Zr shutter button also feel weird.

I have Sony a7r5, zve1, Nikon z8 and the zr feels really weird….

I really hope nikon can just allow us to program the joystick button to AF on with firmware fix.

I noticed that too in my nikon z8. There are certain buttons that can be programmed but are limited to like a few options. WHY? just let the user choose whatever he wants, why limit the programmability??

Are you talking about clicking in on the joystick (what Nikon calls the sub-selector)?

If so, aren't the same 20-odd options as every other Z camera available to you?

.... I just realised after read your post I have not updated my new ZR firmware... I just updated from 1.01 to 1.11.... still the same...

The joystick button can only be set as the following. Tell me nikon is not being stupid...

1) Reset , center AF point
2) Zoom on/off
3) None

The ZR is marketed as a cinema camera, although no doubt lots of people will use it outside of making theatrical movies. Still photography is possible using it but has limitations. Typically if I use AF for video, I use AF-F (full time AF) and not AF-ON with AF-C which is the configuration I use for stills (on other Nikon cameras such as the Z8 and Zf, not the ZR). I think the ZR is probably best used for video.

still, the ZR literally only have like that ONE button that is still reachable by your thumb... hope nikon add this in a firmware update.

I looked into this because I found it surprising, given that the ZR has basically no buttons, and yep, it behaves like a Zf instead of a Z9. At least that's a really simple FW fix.

Just another feather in the "ZR released half-baked" cap.

The “selector” on the ZR is located too low for me want to use it for Back Button Focus. The same is presumably true of the ZF, though I had de-selected the ZF about as soon as I first handled one, before I even started wondering about BBF. Having side-stepped into the Leica M system, in April 2018, but still regularly using the Nikon D5, I am accustomed to having no BBF on cameras that feel like small bricks.

Actually, the same thing was/is true about the Nikon Coolpix A, which I have used, off and on, for quite a while.

I use AF-L/AE-L as AF-ON on the Zf, it's right at the top of the back side of the camera quite similar to the location of the AF-ON button on cameras that have one explicitly labeled as AF-ON. It's definitely a favorite camera body for me. I use the Smallrig grip that came with the camera to provide a deeper grip and Arca-Swiss quick release plate at the bottom as well.

The Zf having such a button, of course, doesn't help ZR users if they should want one as well. I just think of the ZR as not a hybrid or a stills camera but one designed specifically to be a small video camera with Z mount and RED color compatibility.

Thanks, for providing your perspective. Perhaps it is my atypical hand dimensions, long but not wide, and having mostly slender fingers, and short thumbs, but the ZR grip really works well, for me. Plus, the really large 4” LCD is lovely, for waist-level shooting, at which times I am sometimes using my thumb on the shutter button, anyway, making BBF impractical, anyway. The ZR’s LCD is useful, even under the mid-day August sun, in southern Texas. Obviously, waist-level shooting is very helpful for video shooting, but, I am loving it for still images.

The articulating screen seems to work well for some nature photography, too, because many wee beasties and close-range birds will flee, if two front-looking predatory eyes look directly at them. I could already do this, with my D850, but, the ZR has a MUCH larger, more-eye-friendly LCD, which is more-articulable.

As for grips, my favored add-on accessory grip is the lens barrel, of some of my favored lenses. The first Z lens I purchased was a the 26mm “pancake,” which certainly makes for a nicely compact rig, on the ZR, during the times that is important, but, I am loving the shapes of the lens barrels of my Nikkor 35/1.4G and 58/1.4G. Predictably, my much-loved AF-S 24-70/2.8G ED should deliver a good result, too.

I do not plan to ignore video. I recently took delivery of two 512GB Sandisk cards.

Again, thanks. I am new to Nikon Z, and while I was shooting video on Canon 7D DSLRs as early as 2010 or 2011, I am far from experienced with video, and only started liking video shooting, when we bought a pair of hers-and-then-his Z30 Nikon cameras, shortly before I added the ZR. (We had bought a Z6 for my wide, in 2018, at a local Nikon Z6/Z7 launch event, but she has seemingly never used her Z6 for video.)
